Job Description
Job Summary:
Albemarle is looking for an experienced, energetic, influential, and self-motivated individual with high integrity and strong organizational skills to fill the Director of Engineering Management role with a main focus for the America’s, but also supporting globally. This position is part of the Capital Projects Project Engineering organization supporting a growing chemical provider’s capital portfolio. The role will work closely with project management and design staff at all levels of the organization on both Albemarle global growth and sustaining capital work. The overall focus of this role will be to lead and drive the governance of engineering design efforts within global third-party engineering entities. This position will be responsible for the timely delivery of quality engineering design within schedule and budget while advancing innovations for simplification, modularization, and ease of construction from a global supply chain.
Subject Matter Expertise:
-
Experienced managing the successful delivery of engineering design throughout all phases of projects, $1 million to $2 billion, in a chemical plant, mining, or refining environment.

Experienced in coordinating the delivery of owner supplied engineering and design work to contractors and consultants.

Skilled with representing Owner interests and or EPC interests in the bidding and selection of engineering design partners and design packages from vendors.

Skilled in establishing budgets, schedule and staffing plans for producing all types of engineering deliverables for different project sizes and with different engineering production tools and systems.

Understands the sequencing of engineering and design required to support procurement and contracting; including the importance of preliminary and final certified vendor data.

Trained in conducting assurance audits of the engineering and design quality and progress.

Experienced in incorporating standard designs or licensing packages into the engineering workflow and design.

Ensure that all technical requirements and information are maintained and communicated in keeping with standards of the project, including Intellectual Property protection on a global stage.

Assure all engineering and design practices and deliverables comply with applicable laws, regulations, and relevant HSSE requirements.

Thorough understanding of the rules of credit utilized in industry to measure earned hours versus burned hours to monitor engineering progress and produce productivity factors, progress curves, and other tools and leading indicators to ensure engineering deliverables meet project requirements.

Ability to detect productivity, staffing, and quality issues with the engineering design works early and experienced in deploying corrective actions to resolve deficiencies and return work to satisfactory completion.

Proven success in using high value engineering centers and work sharing.

Plan/Drive/Facilitate regular reviews of the engineering progress with contractors / consultants reporting outcomes to project directors / managers.

Skilled in identifying and developing procedures and guidelines for engineering design.
Business, Function, & Team Leadership:

Holds design firms accountable to their scope of work via organized Owner placement and oversight of Engineering Managers on projects. Assure that their blended teams support project objectives and goals to prepare engineering deliverables, procurement, and construction work packages without change orders or delay.

Ability to effectively communicate with a high level of precision and integrity to internal and external stakeholders at all levels. Cross functional collaboration at all levels is imperative.

Contributes to leading, developing, and training the engineering talent within the global organization.

Support the establishment of project organizational structures for delivering engineering designs and the appointment of multidiscipline engineers and designers for global engineering projects.

Ability to work in a matrix organization assisting and driving results through project teams and other functions to assure objective achievement on projects. Influencing skills are important here.

Provide technical guidance to global engineering teams to ensure design best practices are developed and followed.

Act as a subject matter expert and advisor to assist with central governance of global design in all disciplines.

Supports the implementation and maintainability of the engineering strategy for capital projects within the company.
Qualifications:
-
Bachelor or Master of Science Degree in Engineering and/or applicable course of study or equivalent work experience.
-
Flexibility to travel both domestic and international to Albemarle project / operation locations.
-
Experience on projects in South America, Australia, and China a plus.
-
Spanish and Chinese language skills a plus.
Experience:
-
15+ years of experience in process industries (refining, petrochemical, chemical, and mining).
-
10+ years of experience managing and driving the production of engineering and design deliverables on different size projects on a global stage and in multiple design software packages.

Experience with a phase-gate or stage-gate project work process.

Prior engagement with Independent Project Analysis (IPA) and CII a plus.

Understanding of Value Improving Practices (VIPs) that support the industry and specifically the engineering design on projects.

Experience in different method and software tools utilized throughout industry to produce engineering and design deliverables on capital projects.

Knowledge of leading edge design platforms and when to apply.
