The Sr. Director, Strategy & Market Intelligence will report to the Optum Behavioral Health Solutions SVP of Strategy and Alignment. This position will have accountability to partner across the Behavioral Health team and the broader Optum organization on understanding and assessing the external landscape, establishing organizational and channel-specific business strategies aligned with the vision of the organization, and define key enablers based on trends and opportunities in the market. Additionally, this position will need to be highly collaborative and influential across the behavioral health team and broader enterprise to identify opportunities for partnership and further enterprise strategic initiatives.


The Sr. Director, Strategy & Market Intelligence will work with behavioral health leadership and key partners to frame the market, identify market opportunities, build analytics-based strategic plans, and define short- and longer-term business priorities. In order to do this, the Sr. Director, Strategy & Market Intelligence will have a strong understanding of market dynamics, member and customer needs, regulatory impacts, and Optum capabilities across the healthcare landscape. In addition, this leader will help "shape the narrative" throughout the organization to gain strategic support and enable execution planning. This position will also inform areas for M&A activities in alignment with the strategy.


This leader will need to work closely with critical partners such as Behavioral Care Delivery, Channel Leadership, Product Development, Network and Partnerships, Finance, Technology and Human Capital. The Sr. Director is also responsible for leading a highly talented team to accomplish the strategy development, intelligence, and NPS goals across all areas of the Optum Behavioral Health Solutions business.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Strategic planning and analysis: including strategy development and partnership with Finance on annual and long-range plans
  • Channel-level strategies: highlight opportunities, drive clear priorities, and reinforce the OBHS value prop across Care Delivery, Government, Employer, and Payer
  • M&A support: ensure alignment to OBHS strategy and the critical areas that balance build, buy, and partnership opportunities
  • Strategic intelligence and trend forecasting: covering market, industry, stakeholder (consumers, providers, clients), competitive, and innovation areas; including benchmarking and competitor deep dives
  • NPS management: monitoring, measurement and action plans aligned with continuous NPS improvement in alignment to organizational objectives

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 10+ years of relevant industry experience (healthcare, insurance, finance and/or consulting)
  • 5+ years of experience developing business strategies and planning, including experience with market overviews, understanding competitive positioning, analyzing market trends, capital planning and understanding customer needs
  • Experience building and leading teams with high results orientation and a focus on innovation
  • Experience communicating with and influencing thinking of C-Suite executives
  • Experience delivering results with large-scale, cross-functional teams in highly matrixed organizations
  • Experience managing and prioritizing multiple projects to ensure their quality and on-time delivery
  • Proven track record of accomplishing work through others and inspiring others through times of ambiguity
  • Proven superior conceptual, analytical, and financial acumen


Preferred Qualifications:

  • MBA
  • Experience in behavioral healthcare or behavioral health insurance
  • Experience in a risk-based product organization, behavioral healthcare
  • Operational experience (operations, product development, marketing, finance, sales, etc.)

California, Colorado, Connecticut, Nevada, New York, Rhode Island, or Washington Residents Only: The salary range for California, Colorado, Connecticut, Nevada, New York, Rhode Island or Washington residents is $142,300 to $273,200. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
