The City of Las Cruces is the second largest city in New Mexico and is located in Doña Ana County, approximately 45 miles north of El Paso, Texas, and 225 miles south of Albuquerque. Position Number 716291 Position Job Title Statewide Extension Agent/Budgeting Rank Assistant Professor Tenure Status Non-Tenure Track Position Summary
Based in Las Cruces, New Mexico, the Statewide Extension Agent will work with the team of Statewide Agents and Specialists in New Mexico State University’s Extension Economics Department and in the Center of Excellence in Sustainable Food and Agricultural Systems. Agricultural economists in the team address important issues to food and fiber supply chain stakeholders, especially issues faced by the State’s farmers and ranchers. The team works to support the food and fiber supply chain participants in
  • Understanding market factors that influence their profitability and sustainability.
  • Developing strategies and tools that facilitate good business management.
  • Assisting team members in building and maintaining crop and livestock budgets.
  • Analyzing and capitalizing on market opportunities.

The incumbent, with the team, will conduct applied research disseminated in Extension and other scholarly outlets. Additionally, research results will be presented to stakeholders through various outlets, including public presentations, industry association presentations, and one-on-one stakeholder meetings.
The incumbent, with the team, will provide information and direction related to market analysis and forecasting, farm and ranch recordkeeping, crop and livestock budgets, farm and ranch insurance and taxes, and business management and feasibility.
The incumbent will p romote CES programs within the state to meet the LEADS 2025 Equity, Inclusion and Diversity goals prioritizing the program expansion to non-traditional demographics.
Required Qualifications
The successful candidate will:
  • Hold a Master’s degree in agricultural economics, agribusiness, or a closely related field.
  • Provide team support related to economic and business analysis.
  • Interact and support industry associations and organizations.
  • Collaborate with Extension Specialists and County Agents in developing transformational
Extension programming.
  • Develop and promote Extension programs that support food and fiber supply chain
stakeholders.
  • Be responsive to the Extension Economics Department Head.
  • Have a desire and ability to effectively relate to people of all ages, ethnic backgrounds, income
and education levels.
  • Have the ability to communicate, both written and verbally, effectively.

Preferred Qualifications (optional)
  • Understanding of New Mexico and southwest food and fiber systems, especially agricultural
production (farming and ranching)
  • Experience in Extension or related outreach
