** $1,000 sign-on bonus. Half ($500) paid out on first paycheck. The second half ($500) paid out after 90 days of employment**

Operate maintenance equipment such as street sweepers, slope mowers, CCTV camera and high pressure sewer cleaner vacuums for the purpose of improving the functions of the storm sewer system. Other duties include worksite setup, performing routine maintenance, work zone safety, traffic control, hazard awareness, overseeing and training subordinate workers, and assisting other crew and divisions.

Typical Tasks

Operates maintenance equipment to carry out functions such as mowing slopes, sweeping streets, operating CCTV camera, cleaning storm drain pipes and structures. These tasks are done for the purpose of improving the function of the storm sewer system.
Maintains the safe and efficient operation of equipment by performing regular preventive maintenance checks, repairing or replacing worn or damaged parts, reporting any malfunctions not repairable by the operator.
Performs operational support by maintaining building, assisting with special events, storm preparation and clean up, attending safety meetings and trainings, communicating as required.

Note: A skills test involving equipment operations will be given to successful applicants.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

Education
: High School Diploma or GED
Experience: Minimum three (3) years of experience in maintenance of stormwater systems or other closely related experience.
Other Requirements: Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL), or the ability to obtain within the first 180 days of hire. (City of Wilmington compensates for training to attain and retain certifications)

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Thorough knowledge and experience in the proper operation of the following equipment: backhoes, loaders, rollers, street sweepers, vacuum trucks, slope mowers, closed circuit robotic tv systems.
  • Knowledge of traffic control devices and how to properly set up and close off work areas.
  • Practical knowledge of personal computers and various software suites.

Notes
: Work may require different shifts during the week, as well as require work on weekends during festivals or storm events. The following Post-Offer Employment Tests are required:
  • Driving History Check
  • Physical Assessment to evaluate ability to perform the position's essential duties.
  • Drug Screen

Supplemental Information

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Exerting 50-100 lbs. occasionally, 10-25 lbs. frequently, or up to 10-20 lbs. constantly.

WORKING CONDITIONS: This position generally requires works in a vehicle and outdoors


Health Benefits are offered to employees working at least 30 hours per week.

Health Insurance - The City offers two options for health coverage: a standard PPO plan and a High Deductible Health Plan with an associated Health Savings Account. Coverage becomes effective the first day of the month following 30 days of employment for employees and their eligible dependents. Both you and the City contribute to the overall cost of coverage.
Dental Insurance - Coverage becomes effective the first day of the month following 30 days of employment. Employees, their spouse and dependent children are eligible for coverage.

Life Insurance - The city pays to provide coverage valued at one times your annual salary. Supplemental insurance is available for employees to purchase. Optional coverage for dependents is also available for purchase.

Retirement:
- NC Local Government Retirement System - All benefits eligible employees make a mandatory 6% contribution every pay period.

  • Deferred Compensation – The city contributes an amount equal to 4.5% of the annual salary to either the 401(k) or 457 plans regardless of employee contribution. Employees may choose to contribute additional money to the deferred compensation plans, without a match from the City, within the IRS guidelines.
Paid Leave (offered to employees working at least 1,000 hours annually*):
- Sick Leave - 12 days accrued each year
- Annual Leave - Accrual based on years of service and classification. Employees can earn from 10 to 24 days each year.
- Holidays - 12 paid holidays annually
- Paid Parental Leave - Six weeks of paid leave for the birth, adoption or placement of a child (must run concurrently with FMLA).

  • Part-Time Employees will earn paid leave benefits on a pro-rated basis.

Note: The City of Wilmington is on a bi-weekly pay cycle. New employees should expect to recieve their first paycheck approximately 3 weeks after their start date.
