Position Description

** $1,000 sign-on bonus. Half ($500) paid out on first paycheck. The second half ($500) paid out after 90 days of employment**

Provide skilled craft labor in the maintenance and repair of asphalt or concrete related tasks by operating light and heavy equipment, and repairing and maintaining equipment. Other duties include assisting with storm clean up, special events, and setting up traffic control.

Recruiting for three (3) open positions.

Typical Tasks

Operate various light and heavy construction equipment in the maintenance and repair of asphalt and concrete related tasks.
Maintain the safe and efficient operation of equipment by completing regular maintenance, reporting equipment failures, and repairing or replacing worn or damaged parts.
Provide operation support and complete special assignments by assisting other departments with tasks, delivering barricades for special events, assisting with storm clean up, and attending meetings.

Qualifications

Education: High School Diploma or GED
Experience: One (1) year of experience in the operation and maintenance of light and heavy equipment.
Other Requirements:
  • Possession of Class B CDL (Or the ability to obtain within 180 days) and ability to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions. (City of Wilmington compensates for training to attain and retain certifications)
  • Must possess a thorough knowledge in the proper operation of the following equipment: backhoe, loader, roller, tamps, saws, root grinder, mixers, milling machine, crack sealer, and small hand tools.
  • Knowledge of traffic control devices and how to properly set up and close off work area.
Notes: The selected candidate will be required to complete a driving history check, a post-offer drug screen and P.O.E.T. (post offer evaluation test).

Supplemental Information

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Exerting 50-100 lbs. occasionally, 10-25 lbs. frequently, or up to 10-20 lbs. constantly.

WORKING CONDITIONS: This position generally requires works in a vehicle and outdoors.

Health Benefits are offered to employees working at least 30 hours per week.

Health Insurance - The City offers two options for health coverage: a standard PPO plan and a High Deductible Health Plan with an associated Health Savings Account. Coverage becomes effective the first day of the month following 30 days of employment for employees and their eligible dependents. Both you and the City contribute to the overall cost of coverage.
Dental Insurance - Coverage becomes effective the first day of the month following 30 days of employment. Employees, their spouse and dependent children are eligible for coverage.

Life Insurance - The city pays to provide coverage valued at one times your annual salary. Supplemental insurance is available for employees to purchase. Optional coverage for dependents is also available for purchase.

Retirement:
- NC Local Government Retirement System - All benefits eligible employees make a mandatory 6% contribution every pay period.

  • Deferred Compensation – The city contributes an amount equal to 4.5% of the annual salary to either the 401(k) or 457 plans regardless of employee contribution. Employees may choose to contribute additional money to the deferred compensation plans, without a match from the City, within the IRS guidelines.
Paid Leave (offered to employees working at least 1,000 hours annually*):
- Sick Leave - 12 days accrued each year
- Annual Leave - Accrual based on years of service and classification. Employees can earn from 10 to 24 days each year.
- Holidays - 12 paid holidays annually
- Paid Parental Leave - Six weeks of paid leave for the birth, adoption or placement of a child (must run concurrently with FMLA).

  • Part-Time Employees will earn paid leave benefits on a pro-rated basis.

Note: The City of Wilmington is on a bi-weekly pay cycle. New employees should expect to recieve their first paycheck approximately 3 weeks after their start date.
