Merrick is actively seeking an Entry Level Structural Engineer to join our team of engineering and design professionals serving in the Nuclear Services & Technology Business Unit at our growing office in Aiken, SC.
Client projects for this position require US citizenship.
The successful candidate will work under the supervision of senior engineers to perform detailed analysis and design for systems, structures, and components for nuclear facilities, primarily for the Department of Energy (DOE) using DOE design codes and standards.
The successful candidate will work in a multidisciplinary engineering team completing the structural analysis, design and seismic qualification of nuclear safety-related systems, structures, and components, including custom material handling and process/containment equipment (primarily gloveboxes). The work will involve preparing comprehensive design packages by writing specifications, calculations, and other documents, as well as assisting in the preparation of design drawings.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting all structural design duties including the following:
- Work on discrete tasks to generate comprehensive and detailed engineering products, including technical reports, calculations, specifications, and drawings.
- Participate in all support activities required to complete all design efforts and quality assurance processes.
- Work with other disciplines to ensure accuracy of the package, meet schedule, and budget commitments.
- Work in a collaborative design team environment.
- Ensure internal communication and coordination of design efforts occurs, often with design team members dispersed among Merrick’s offices across the country.
Required Qualifications & Experience
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The qualifications and experience listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability that is required:

- Degree Requirements:
- Bachelor of Science degree in civil / structural engineering from an ABET accredited program is required;
- Master's degree is a plus.
- Previous structural internship experience preferred.
- Zero (0) to three (3) years of commercial or nuclear facility design experience.
- Effective, clear, and concise oral and written communication skills.
- Strong grasp of fundamental structural engineering design theories and principles.
- Basic familiarity with conventional structural design codes. These include but are not limited to:
- IBC
- ASCE 7
- AISC Steel Construction Manual
- ACI 318
- Fluency using Microsoft Office Suite (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Meets expectations for attendance and punctuality.
Physical Requirements
- Requires the ability to sit for extended periods at a computer workstation.
- Be able to work in an environment with open discussions and visitors without getting distracted.
- May be required to lift up to 20 lbs.

Work Environment
The job will include periodic visits to job sites and fabricators.
