Elementary Writing Ranger

Overview:

Adventures in Writing Camp is seeking energetic and experienced teachers to inspire campers through writing instruction. The ideal candidate is a skilled educator who loves writing, and delights in sharing that love with young people.

You:

  • You're inspired by Adventure in Writing Camp’s mission to help children fall in love with writing! Writing education, project-based learning, student choice, and creative, welcoming spaces all speak to the very heart of who you are.
  • You’re a team player. You’ll be working closely with your eBook Ranger counterpart to help each camper write, edit, illustrate, and publish their own eBook.
  • You’re ready to grow. You know that true mastery requires commitment, effort, thoughtful feedback, personal reflection, and implementation of lessons learned.

Us:

Inspire and be inspired! Immerse yourself in a world of creativity and music as you foster a love of writing among elementary and middle school campers. Adventures in Writing Camp is a two week day camp that channels the power of childhood imagination into writing success! The camp’s curriculum and lessons guide students through the process of writing, illustrating and creating their own eBook or blog.

What you’ll do...

Over the course of the camp, each camper will write, illustrate, and publish an eBook using the Book Creator app. Campers spend 50-minutes daily with a Writing Ranger (this position) who focuses instruction on specific writing skills, and on improving story drafts. Campers spend 110 minutes daily with an eBook ranger who oversees the illustrating and making of the eBooks using iPads.

While instruction is held in separate classrooms, the eBook and Writing Rangers will work together to ensure that campers are engaged, learning, and ultimate create a story and eBook that they are proud to bring home. Finished eBooks are displayed on the Lemur Library (www.library.aiwcamp.com).

During camp, you will have 30 minutes of morning prep-time to prepare your lessons and to collaborate with your teaching counterpart(s). Though we provide you with materials and lesson plans to lead your sessions, we empower you to add your own flair and personality to really make these lessons your own.

The Writing Ranger will take the lead on delivering lessons that develop specific writing skills such as brainstorming, organization, sensory details, author’s voice, character development, revising, editing, opinion, and summary writing. The Writing Ranger, will also be responsible for working with students to help write the stories that will be published in the eBook class.

Each group of students (called troops) has one or two local college students, or “Adventure Guides,” available as support during lessons and throughout the day. We anticipate a ratio of no more than 1 teacher to 25 students, and one staff member to every 7 campers.

What we’re looking for...

  • Teaching credential or equivalent experience.
  • Experience working with K-5th grade children
  • Current First Aid CPR Certification
  • Experience teaching with tablets is a plus, as well as familiarity with the book publishing process.
  • Excellent communicator (with parents, staff, and Site Administrator)

Time Commitment and Schedule

This is a 2-week commitment for the summer with the option of working more weeks if desired.

The Writing Ranger will be on site from 8:15am – 3:15pm with breaks for prep and lunch. For the sake of the kids’ experience, it is expected that applicants plan to be available all ten days of any camp sessions they are working.
