The Minnehaha County Highway Department is currently accepting applications for several Highway and Bridge Maintenance Laborers to work on our team this summer.

This is a great outdoor summer job with 40 hours a week and 3-day weekends every week! Previous experience is not required and we will provide all of the training.

Our team works Monday through Thursday from 7:00 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. with every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday off. These positions will work out of the BRAND NEW Highway Department facility located at 2124 E. 60th Street North in Sioux Falls. The positions will work May through August 2023 with the potential to work through October 2023. Dates may be flexible with a selected candidate's schedule.

How You Will Make an Impact

Highway maintenance positions will perform semi-skilled labor on a specialty crew, maintenance crew or construction crew. Actual work duties performed will depend on the crew assignment but may include flagging, repairing fences, mowing and weed eating, asphalt paving, sealing, general clean up, delivering materials, loading/unloading materials, and other related duties.

Bridge maintenance positions will perform semi-skilled bridge maintenance on County bridges including deck repair using jackhammers, concrete tools and other various tools and equipment; cleaning debris in the river channel near bridge structures; installing or repairing guardrails; sandblasting and painting steel bridge girders, bearings and bridge rails; and other related duties.

What You Need to Succeed in this Role

High school diploma or GED. Applicants must be age 18 by the date of hire. Must successfully complete a criminal background check. Must possess a valid driver's license and good driving record. Ability to perform strenuous physical labor, occasionally perform heavy lifting of 50lbs, and perform heavy manual work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Ability to understand and comply with verbal and written instructions and to maintain a variety of records. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public. Ability to maintain a professional appearance and demeanor.

Other Applicable Experience

Previous experience working for a highway department in construction, bridge maintenance, or vehicle maintenance or experience working in a similar environment.
