A Brief Overview
The Surgical Materials Assistant is responsible for supporting the operations of the Surgical Materials Department for Stanford University Medical Center and Lucile Packard Children's Hospital. The Surgical Materials Assistant will participate in the activities/duties of the Department by the following policy and procedure for breakout, storage and product return of sterile items for use in the surgical setting. Performs basic order entry, inventory management, par cart supply, and surgical case cart build. Participates in the departmental patient safety and performance improvement initiatives. Performs related duties as assigned.

What you will do
  • Assists with the training and orientation of new staff.
  • Builds case carts for basic surgical procedures with a fill accuracy rate of 100% as verified by department audits and/or observation of Lead/Supervisor.
  • Conforms to standard procedures and methods used to store and distribute supplies within the applicable Federal, State and other regulatory agencies including Joint Commission, AAMI, and AORN.
  • Demonstrates the ability to assess, identify and respond to urgent or stat request in an efficient, effective and appropriate manner. Seeks resources for direction, when necessary.
  • Ensures the prudent use of resources and efficiently maintains inventory.
  • Inventories and restocks surgical suites and surgical core supplies.
  • Is willing to participate in on-going in-services training and on the job training.
  • Maintains a professional work environment; keeps work area clean and organized. Practices good time management. Maintains professional behavior and appearance. Promotes a positive work environment by practicing good communication, diversity awareness and teamwork.
  • Maintains acceptable attendance and punctuality per department policy.
  • Manages information utilizing appropriate manual or electronic systems for shift work activity. Reports any discrepancies or unusual activity to the Lead and/or Supervisor.
  • Performs breakout of sterile product utilizing sound practices that protect the integrity of the sterile packages.
  • Performs duties by following the policy and procedures of SUMC and LPCH and the Surgical Materials Department. Works collaboratively with peers to achieve department goals and organizations vision.
  • Performs inventory management of specific supplies and “Caddies” and restocks PAR cart for surgical use.
  • Performs order entry in PMM. Generates the appropriate purchase requisitions for products needed and sends to appropriate department.
  • Performs restocking of returned surgical product. Follows departmental guidelines for accepting the return of unused, unopened surgical product.
  • Prepares assigned shift work report of activity and appraise Lead and/or Supervisor of issues and needs.
  • Shelves sterile product utilizing recommended practices in stock rotation and “event related” sterility maintenance.
  • Stocks /restocks supplies to specified location with a placement accuracy rate of 100% as verified by the Lead and Supervisor.
  • Utilizes surgery scheduling software to generate Worksheets, Pick Tickets, and Surgery schedule.

Education Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent

Experience Qualifications
  • Previous experience in Supply Distribution, Sterile Processing or Operating Rooms

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of computer systems and basic computer skills
  • Basic Knowledge of medical and surgical supplies
  • Must have the ability to follow policies and procedures regarding all aspects of an assignment including basic arithmetic and inventory calculations.
  • Demonstrated business communication skills (including reading, writing and communicating) to Hospital staff, physicians, vendors, and the public.
  • Willing to participate in on-going in-services training and on the job training.

Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $27.91 - $31.31 per hour

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.
