Job description
The School of Natural Sciences anticipates hiring teaching fellow for Academic Year 2023-2024, in the Biological Sciences.
- Provide mentorship, support, and teaching professional development for graduate teaching assistants (TAs)
- Improve communication between graduate TAs and instructors of record
- Design and improve curriculum for discussion sections
- Serve as a back-up TA for discussion sections during short-term emergencies.
- Attend weekly mentoring meetings with the instructors of record (IOR)
- Attend weekly instructional team meetings with IORs and TAs
- Prepare and lead weekly TA meetings
- Facilitate active-learning activities during lectures
- Hold weekly office hours for TAs and/or students
- Available to proctor, photocopy, and grade exams
- Conduct peer observations of teaching in discussions
A Teaching Fellow is a registered graduate student in full-time residence who has advanced to candidacy for the doctorate, at least two years of teaching experience (including that of a teaching assistantship) in or outside the University, and under the general supervision of a regular faculty member. Maintenance of a qualifying grade-point average is also required. Must meet all requirements outlined in the UC Merced Graduate Policies and Procedures Handbook and Academic Personnel Manual 410. Must have served as a graduate Teaching Assistant in the biological sciences for least one semester at UC Merced. Preferred candidates will have either taken QSB 201: Teaching and Learning in the Sciences or received other teaching professional development training.
