Manages technical services in 329,000 square feet of operational space that includes the following: The Union Complex (The Hub, RC Cook Union, and Thad Cochran Center), the Joe Paul Student Theater, and the first floor of the Trent Lott National Center for Entrepreneurship and Economic Development, requiring a sporadic work schedule during and outside of normal hours of business, and an on-call status for after hours, weekends, and for events during University holidays. Assists with supervising student staff responsible for room set-ups, audio and technical set-up, custodial concerns, emergency situations, maintenance needs and ensures that visitors to the facilities adhere to University and facility regulations.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs and supervises technical services for the University Union Complex, Joe Paul Student Theater, Trent Lott National Center, Danforth Chapel, Spirit Park, Southern Station, and other outdoor locations. Responsible for coordinating maintenance and troubleshooting of security camera system with iTech. Responsible for the commissioning and decommissioning audiovisual services, and includes working with and coordinating the activities of third-party vendors. Property accounting contact for department. Maintains state inventory for facility equipment, conducts annual internal audit and state audits when requested.
  • Consults with Union Director and Associate Director for Union Operations to procure vendors and contractors for major upgrades, replacements, repairs, or improvements to facility audiovisual systems, lighting, security, software-based applications and other technological innovations to ensure state of the art service delivery. Procures quotes and receives approval from purchasing department to finalize purchases and meet state and university purchasing requirements. Recommends purchase for general equipment as requested or required.
  • Responsible for planning, developing, delivering, and assessing the effectiveness of audio-visual training programs. Responsible for AV and technology training of student staff of approximately 30 undergraduate students, which includes creating, updating, and modifying training documents, manuals, and handbooks regularly. Assists Facilities Manager and Associate Director with other hiring, training, disciplinary and evaluation duties. May supervise other student staff or special projects as assigned.
  • Serves as front line ambassador with all Union Complex customers to coordinate needs with the Union Department staff. Communicates with customers for technical needs before, during, and after events. Serves as an in-room AV technician for events as requested. Assists in ensuring building maintenance needs are met and helps monitor the physical facility. Helps communicate with custodial workers to ensure a clean facility. Makes facility and room recommendations during event planning process regarding technical needs and capabilities and advises administration regarding policy and procedures as they relate to technical services.
  • Serves as technical manager of the 9000 sq. ft., 324-seat Joe Paul Student Theater. Provides trained personnel for events requiring technical resources. Manages other aspects of space before, during and after events. Primary contact for maintenance and operation of all technical resources in space. Also serves as technical manager of the 4,000 sq. ft. Esports Arena and Southern Miss Game Room. Trains staff on equipment and maintains equipment within the spaces. Recommends purchase of general equipment as needed utilizing Esports budget in coordination with Esports Coordinator.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma and at least four years of experience in technology and audiovisual services.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
KSA’s in the following areas are desired; teamwork, problem solving, creative thinking, oral and written communication, critical thinking, and leadership.
  • Expected to engage in public speaking, interpersonal interaction, facility management, event management, long-range planning, technical skills, financial management, and others.
  • Skilled in technical services such as video routing, switching, scaling and cabling infrastructure, sound reinforcement and components, speaker systems, microphones, DSPs, mixer boards (analog and digital) and cabling, client and server based software applications (Visix Digital Signage, Crestron), commercial lighting control, and event and facility operations with a technical focal point.
  • Knowledge includes but are not limited to a 30-foot LED video wall in prominent location, lecture capture or live-stream recording and streaming hardware and software systems, theatrical lighting consoles, network storage devices, DCP compliant projectors, laser and lamp-based projectors, Dolby cinema processors, electronic key boxes, monitors and touch panels, and more.
  • Skilled with hand tools related to technical work and instructional design, training and assessment. Ability to physically perform tasks such as frequently lift items at or near 50 lbs, kneel, crawl, and climb.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with one year of experience in technology and audiovisual services preferred. Certifications in Crestron, Lutron, Certified Technology Specialist (CTS), Biamp, CompTIA A+, Extron, Barco, and other areas of audio and video equipment and IT preferred. Other preferred certifications may include OSHA or certifications related to facility and event management.
