Position Summary
The Colorado Natural Heritage Program (CNHP) at Colorado State University, Warner College of Natural Resources, seeks 2-4 technicians to conduct field work on various projects in Colorado for the summer of 2023. CHNP’s main office is Fort Collins, Colorado, and the work will be primarily conducted in Southeastern Colorado.
Colorado Natural Heritage Program Zoology Team conducts remote, field-based surveys for various Colorado taxa. In 2023, the Zoology Team will be conducting rare amphibian surveys in Southeastern Colorado with potential additional projects that include bat surveys/acoustic monitoring, boreal toad monitoring, and general zoological inventory projects.
Projects:
Rare Amphibian Survey Project in Southeastern Colorado
This project is a Colorado Parks and Wildlife funded project to survey for rare amphibian species in Southeastern Colorado. Species include Couch’s Spadefoot Toads, Green Toads, and Western Narrow-mouthed Toads. This project employs a dual-frame sampling design where historical and randomized sites are surveyed in a standardized method. The majority of the sites are in Otero, Bent, Prowers, Las Animas and Baca Counties. The survey sites are predominately located on the Comanche National Grasslands with additional sites at State Wildlife Areas, TNC properties, and on private land. Technicians will travel to selected sites and complete surveys that adhere to the sample design and record all data on field forms. Most site visits will require tent camping in remote areas with occasional hotel or bunk house stays. A field vehicle will be provided. After a training period, the technicians will be expected to work independently while coordinating closely with the project leader.
This position will be making decisions about where and how to safely conduct surveys as required by project. Technicians will decide in coordination with project leader on how best to survey sites for specific species, where to camp, how to travel to field sites, and how best to complete required data collection requirements. Technician must be able to work independently without direct supervision.
Beginning Monday, August 16, 2021, Colorado State University has mandated vaccinations against COVID-19. Faculty and staff are required to submit their vaccine status or declare an exemption. More information about the vaccination mandate can be found on the CSU COVID-19 Information & Resources site here, https://covid.colostate.edu/pandemic-preparedness-team-broad-guidance-for-all-summer-and-fall-2021-activities/
