is seeking a highly ambitious, adaptable, structured, and detail-oriented Toxicologic Research Scientist to join our vibrant team at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) supporting the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) located in Research Triangle, NC.

Overall Position Summary and Objectives
This PhD level scientist will work in the Mechanistic Toxicology Branch (MTB) of Division of Translational Toxicology (DTT) of NIEHS and support activities related to evaluation/qualification of new approach methodology, innovation in chemical screening, and identifying methods for assessing bioactivity of mixtures and biomarkers of effect in studies meant to inform environmental hazard assessment. Experience should include: in vitro culture models, nucleic acid extraction, real-time PCR, genomic sample preparation, data analyses, high-content imaging, data storage in CEBS, documentation of SOPs, electronic notebook record keeping, contribute to writing and drafting scientific manuscripts, oral presentations and staff/student mentoring.

Deliverables:
  • Meet with lab members to present updates - Weekly
  • Co-author research projects based in the MTB - Yearly
  • Meet with project lead, staff and trainees via Zoom or Teams to assist in solving technical and research issues, and participate in project planning, equipment or new protocol training, collaborative project updates - Ad-Hoc
  • Be a point of contact for advanced common use equipment in the Branch to provide advice/training/use calendars - Ad-Hoc
  • Attend MTB and DTT scientific sessions, invited seminars and NIEHS sponsored trainings that may enhance your knowledge or skillset - Monthly
  • Meet with Project lead to review research progress. - Bi-Annually
Work Details:
  • Provides technical experience needed to assist in studying the basic principles of plant and animal life
  • Study the mechanistic basis for effects of environmental chemicals on human and rodent cell-based models and fitfor-purpose small animal studies 2
  • Develop or identify methods and conduct assays for assessing bioactivities isolated from blood/urine/culture media of exposed models 1
  • Work with the lab lead and their team to develop appropriate study designs for the research program 3
  • Assists with performing basic laboratory experiments and procedures.
  • Analyze experimental data and interpret results to write reports and summaries of findings 5
  • Train staff or fellows on technical equipment or novel assays/analysis software as needed 4
  • Develop SOPs and note their adherence by trainees and staff, retraining them when necessary.
  • Assist in the design, conduct or collection of tissues from fit-for-purpose toxicology studies.
  • Prepares, organizes and maintains various lab samples, supplies, and equipment.
  • Operate laboratory equipment to analyze samples.
  • Analyze laboratory findings.
  • Provide training and calendars for common use equipment within the Branch as needed.
  • Identify and provide quotes for equipment that may advance innovation in our Branch
  • Provide advice, protocols, and technical expertise on cell culture and molecular-based research studies
  • Notify the lab lead when laboratory equipment calibration and yearly maintenance checks are due
  • Learns new laboratory techniques and procedures
  • Monitor operational procedures in technical environments to ensure conformance to standards
  • Design, conduct, analyze and interpret innovative research resulting in first-authored work
  • Take advantage of trainings offered to enhance skillset and to bring new ideas to the Branch
  • Contribute a technical skillset to team-based projects which results in co-authorship of peer-reviewed manuscripts
  • Develop new cell-based model systems as needed, including 2D, 3D, primary cultures and microfluidic platform approaches
  • Adapts new laboratory techniques and procedures to address changing research needs.
