Job description
The Traffic Investigator is a civilian position specializing in the field of traffic accident investigation, traffic accident prevention, and criminal and incident report writing.

- Demonstrating a working knowledge of state law, municipal ordinances, codes and legal procedures relating to the operations of vehicles and criminal reporting procedures
- Evaluating information, collecting logs, and maintaining a chain of custody for evidence.
- Using appropriate oral and written communication to prepare reports
- Interacting with City staff and the public, and responding to calls for service
- Maintaining equipment; and inspecting accident investigation vehicles
- Providing traffic direction and control
- Assisting disabled vehicles
- Identifying and arranging for removal of abandoned vehicles that obstruct roadways.
Associate’s Degree or higher and minimum one (1) year of related experience working as an accident investigator or law enforcement officer.
OR
High School Diploma and a minimum of three (3) years of related experience working as an accident investigator or law enforcement officer.
Other Requirements: Valid Driver’s License.
Notes: Driving and criminal history checks are required. The selected candidate will also have to complete a post-offer drug screen and polygraph examination.
Knowledge of the street names and locations in the City of Wilmington and surrounding area.
Skill in understanding and interpreting complex regulations and guidelines

Health Benefits are offered to employees working at least 30 hours per week.
Health Insurance - The City offers two options for health coverage: a standard PPO plan and a High Deductible Health Plan with an associated Health Savings Account. Coverage becomes effective the first day of the month following 30 days of employment for employees and their eligible dependents. Both you and the City contribute to the overall cost of coverage.
Dental Insurance - Coverage becomes effective the first day of the month following 30 days of employment. Employees, their spouse and dependent children are eligible for coverage.
Life Insurance - The city pays to provide coverage valued at one times your annual salary. Supplemental insurance is available for employees to purchase. Optional coverage for dependents is also available for purchase.
Retirement:
- NC Local Government Retirement System - All benefits eligible employees make a mandatory 6% contribution every pay period.
- Deferred Compensation – The city contributes an amount equal to 4.5% of the annual salary to either the 401(k) or 457 plans regardless of employee contribution. Employees may choose to contribute additional money to the deferred compensation plans, without a match from the City, within the IRS guidelines.
- Sick Leave - 12 days accrued each year
- Holidays - 12 paid holidays annually
- Paid Parental Leave - Six weeks of paid leave for the birth, adoption or placement of a child (must run concurrently with FMLA).
- Part-Time Employees will earn paid leave benefits on a pro-rated basis.
