Job description
Reports to: Executive Director, Office of District and School Transformation
About the Office of School Transformation
Serving twenty-eight Transformation schools serving approximately 15,000 students, The Office of District and School Transformation’s (ODST) vision is to establish and maintain the conditions necessary to ensure all Boston Public Schools (BPS) students and families are consistently provided with high quality, culturally relevant and affirming learning experiences. In partnership with educators, students, families, and community partners across the district, ODST aims to dismantle systems that create barriers for our schools to thrive, while ensuring schools have access to the resources required to facilitate positive outcomes for all students and deliver on the district's commitment to becoming an antiracist organization.
ODST is responsible for supporting the progress and sustainability of schools in BPS that have been identified as “In Need of Intervention and Assistance” by the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (these are referred to within BPS as “Transformation” schools). Currently, there are 28 Transformation Schools in BPS supported by the Office of District and School Transformation. ODST takes a dual approach to support these schools, providing direct support to individual school teams and advocating for the regional networks and district office to prioritize effective support for transformation schools.
Position Overview
Just as the Office of District and School Transformation balances a focus between district-level systems and school-level supports, the Transformation Manager will balance time providing intensive support for a specific portfolio of schools, leading special projects, and coordinating support with internal stakeholders. The balance of school-facing and district-facing projects will shift throughout the year based on the priority needs of our schools.
The Transformation Manager will support the process of continuous improvement within their portfolio of schools, focusing together with the school leadership team on implementation of the Quality School Plan. In collaboration with other BPS departments, the Transformation Manager will also support specific projects at the regional and district level, including but not limited to the recruitment of educators in hard-to-staff areas, the establishment of partnerships to support school improvement, and the professional development of educators and school leaders.
The ideal candidate has a mindset of continuous improvement, a commitment to educational equity, strong organizational and communication skills and the ability to work effectively alongside school leaders, district staff and leadership team members, and external stakeholders. Candidates must be willing to reflect on and grow their capacity to have conversations about equity, anti-racism, and the practices, systems, and conditions that marginalize students.
Responsibilities

- Partner with school-based teams to create systems to internally track progress towards school improvement targets and use data to identify successes and barriers to progress
- Work closely with regional school superintendents and regions liaison teams to highlight your school’s best practices, to engage in ongoing problem-solving when challenges arise, and strategically leverage internal supports and external, district-approved resources to support schools in removing barriers to implementing their core improvement work.
- Develop a grant spending plan for your portfolio of schools in collaboration with school teams that meets ESSA evidence-based qualifications and that is aligned to each school’s Transformation priorities.

- Liaise with district leads assigned to your portfolio to increase schools’ access to district supports and ensure that schools meet DESE compliance.
- Lead cross-departmental workgroups to engage in ongoing problem-solving around common issues that arise across Transformation Schools, to support the Transformation Strategy’s development and evolution, and to ensure decisions align with ODST’s transformation strategy and the needs of schools.
- Work across district teams to co-create common language and practices that assist in the elevation of CLSP and anti-racist practices in our schools and school system.
