The Position
MAG’s Transportation System Management and Operations (TSMO) Program is seeking a qualified candidate for a full-time Transportation Engineer I, II, or III position, depending on qualifications. MAG TSMO Program provides technical services to our member agencies to advance traffic operations and promote collaboration across jurisdictions by applying advanced data analytics and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) solutions.
This position seeks candidates who are passionate about technology, transportation, and making a positive impact on communities. This position will work with a diverse team of professionals, from engineers and data scientists to policymakers, and local agencies to advance the ITS in the MAG region. The selected candidate will report to the TSMO Program Manager at MAG.
The Candidate
The ideal candidate will have knowledge and experience working with data analytics and traffic management using ITS solutions. The relevant expertise includes ITS planning, implementation, data analytics, emerging technologies, project development and management, and support of committee meetings. The ability to work responsively and productively in a fast-paced team environment with multiple projects and assignments is essential. Strong oral and written communication skills are necessary.
Education and Experience Requirements
The preferred candidate will have the following educational qualifications:
An undergraduate or higher degree in transportation planning, traffic engineering, or a related field; a minimum of 3 years of relevant work or research experience with traffic engineering or transportation engineering with a focus on ITS. A Professional Engineering (PE) license is preferred.
Strong technical skills are necessary:
Experienced with traffic signal timing optimization tools (Synchro, Transync)
Experienced with GIS, relational database, and data visualization
Knowledge of statistical analysis
Knowledge of programming languages (Python, C, Java, R)
Knowledge of traffic modeling tools (Dynus-T, Dynameq, microsimulation)
Understanding of ITS operations is necessary:
ITS systems (Traffic Management Centers, field devices, and communications)
Freeway and arterial traffic management
Traffic signal and traffic detections
Traffic signal coordination
Traffic sensors and third-party data
Performance measures

MUTCD concerning traffic signal operations
Concept of Integrated Corridor Management (ICM)
Concept of Traffic Incident Management (TIM)
