POSITION DESCRIPTION
POSITION: TRUCK DRIVER/OPERATOR
One (1) Full-time, Non-Exempt position
LOCATION: Public Works Department
16278 Ojibwa Industrial Park
Baraga, MI 49908
SUPERVISORY CONTROL: Public Works Director
SALARY: Grade 7 minimum starting wage $19.47/hour
SUMMARY:
Operate one or several types of power construction equipment, such as excavators,
tractors, bulldozers, or front-end loaders to load trucks, snowplows, and remove snow.
Drive a tractor-trailer combination or truck with a capacity of at least 26,000 per axel
weight (GVW). Will be required to load and unload the truck. Must maintain/repair
equipment and vehicles as needed. Requires commercial driver’s license Class B
(CDL) and performs related work as assigned. This position is expected to have a
high degree of technical expertise and to exercise considerable independence,
judgment, and discretion with providing service to the community.
QUALIFICATIONS:
· High School diploma or GED equivalent andthree (3) years of combined education and experience in power equipment operation and commercial truck driving.
· Must have a valid, unrestricted Michigan Commercial Driver License, Class B, with the proper endorsements to operate any/all equipment or vehicles within the public works department. Must sign the KBIC Driving Record Check form.
· Strong knowledge of safety regulations, traffic laws, and rules.
· Familiar with safe work methods and practices of the work.
· Knowledge of operations and maintenance of a variety of equipment and hand and power tools and equipment used in the work.
- Must be in good physical condition, since Truck Drivers are required to pass a physical exam every two years.
- Hand-eye coordination must coordinate hands, legs, and eyes to maintain a fast reaction time on the roads.
- Visual and hearing acuity, under federal regulations which mandate that truck drivers have to hear a forced whisper at 5 feet, have at least 20/40 vision, a 70-degree field of vision, and the ability to distinguish the colors of traffic lights
· Knowledge of applicable tribal, local, state, and federal laws and regulations relating to transportation and public works.
· Must be able to lift 50 pounds unassisted.
· Employment is contingent upon the satisfactory result of a Security Background Check, pre-employment drug testing, and pre-employment physical.
INDIAN PREFERENCE: Preference will be given to qualified individuals of American Indian descent.
VETERAN PREFERENCE: Preference will also be given to Veterans who do not have bad conduct or dishonorable discharges (need DD214).
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Operates and maintains equipment, vehicles, and tools used in the field.
· Identifies and implements effective courses of action to complete assigned work.
· Ensures adherence to safe work practices.
· Maintains accurate records.
· Use sound, independent judgment within policy and procedural guidelines.
· Represents the department and the KBIC effectively with public and private organizations and the public.
· Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.
· Normal hazards associated with construction environment.
· Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
