The Wall of Wind Experimental Facility (WOW-EF) is seeking talented and driven undergraduate students to join our team as undergraduate research assistants. As an undergraduate research assistant, you will have the opportunity to work alongside experienced facility researchers and professors on complex research projects at the Wall of Wind EF, gaining valuable hands-on experience in a dynamic and collaborative environment. In addition to conducting research, undergraduate assistants will be expected to serve as Learning Assistants (LAs) for the Hurricane Engineering and Global Sustainability course in the upcoming Fall Semester. This role will require you to develop a strong understanding of natural hazards and help support students in their academic pursuits. You will provide guidance, facilitate group discussions and team projects, and assist in the incorporation of WOW research findings into the course, all while working closely with professors and other members of the academic staff to ensure that students receive the support they need to succeed. To excel in this role, excellent communication skills, a passion for education and research, and a willingness to work closely with your peers are essential. The WOW-EF is a world-class, full-scale wind engineering testing facility located at Florida International University (FIU). As a Natural Hazards Engineering Research Infrastructure (NHERI) facility funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the WOW-EF is at the forefront of cutting-edge research on natural hazards.

The duties will include areas such as (but not limited to):


Undergraduate Research Assistant:

  • Completing all safety training courses at WOW-EF.
  • Assisting in daily activities at the Wall of Wind Experimental Facility.
  • Assisting in the preparation of testing specimens (design, construction, instrumentation, etc.).

Learning Assistant:

  • Maintaining a sense of professionalism. This includes being on time for class and related meetings, adhering to a casual yet professional dress code, and remaining engaged with students throughout class.
  • Preparing individually for next class and going over the content (1-hour a week).
  • Participating in planning meetings (1-2 hours a week) with the lead professor and the other LAs and TAs. This meeting will prepare everyone for class.
  • Successfully completing the LA Seminar (SMT 3931) with an A in their first semester of LA work.
  • Promoting a safe learning environment where students feel accepted and included in class.

Minimum Qualifications


Ideal candidates will have a strong academic background in engineering and a demonstrated interest in disaster preparedness, resilience, and hazard research. We are looking for individuals who are curious, driven, and eager to learn and apply new skills and knowledge to real-world problems. In addition to technical skills, we are seeking candidates who possess excellent communication and teamwork skills, as research in this field often involves working with interdisciplinary teams of researchers, policymakers, and practitioners from various fields.
