About the role

You’ll be joining an underwriting team that that is responsible for our customers’ life insurance purchase journey on an award-winning technology platform that automates and assists our underwriting assessment. You will classify mortality in a sound, objective and consistent manner by applying company guidelines and philosophies.


What you will do

  • Gain a basic knowledge of insurance medicine, underwriting principals and life insurance industry practices through a formal training program. Apply training and demonstrate a baseline level of proficiency in risk classification while meeting established department processing timelines.
  • Develop a basic understanding of underwriting philosophies, documentation and techniques. Complete of in-depth study of the human body, its systems, and associated medical conditions, as well as becoming familiar with commonly prescribed medications. Establish a baseline understanding of non-medical risks and their effects on risk evaluation. Demonstrate an ability to apply the concepts learned above during Case Clinics and the processing of formal applications
  • Communicate effectively with agents/producers and case contacts to explain underwriting decisions and provide current application status. Answer and appropriately resolve a proportionate share of agent and customer inquiries to the Life Underwriting phone queue. Other duties/projects as assigned
  • Review individual life insurance applications and underwrite preferred through substandard risks within authorized limits of authority.
  • Communicate effectively with customers, agents, and agency staff to support swift handling of applications and deepen Symetra’s relationship with our customers and partners.
  • Use your passion, skills, and interest to improve our platform and processes for our customers and employees.
  • Empowered to own the new business underwriting process from beginning to end including direct interaction with our customers.

Compensation

Hourly Range: $21.00 - $34.19 plus eligibility for annual bonus program


Your education, experience and skills
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent education and experience.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to multi-task effectively.
  • A customer focused mind set and positive attitude.
  • Proven ability to quickly synthesize and adopt new concepts, with a strong attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving and decision-making skills and attention to detail.
  • Proactive communicator with effective written and interpersonal skills.
  • Documented ability to sustain a high quality of work in a production-based environment.
  • LOMA coursework through basic certification preferred.
