The photographer produces photographs that support KU's communication and marketing goals and portrays the University as vibrant, diverse, and supportive. Responsibilities include setting up shoots, initiating new projects, shooting, editing, record keeping and related activities.
The photographer works independently setting up shoots, producing exceptional photography at all hours of the day, and supports Marketing objectives to improve recruitment efforts at the University of Kansas.

Job Description
40% Produce photographs
- Produce photographs that support KU’s communication and marketing goals and portray the University as vibrant, diverse, and supportive.
- Research photo ops, scouting locations, prepping equipment for fieldwork, and restoring communal equipment.
- Edit, re-name, serialize, embed (meta-data), and deposit raw format image files in a timely manner.
- When photographing speeches, press conferences, performances, and events, provide color-corrected jpegs of the very best frames for immediate Web posting. For daytime events, deliver by 9 a.m. on the following day. For nighttime events, deliver by noon of the following day. In special circumstances or emergencies, quicker turn-around will be required and will be decided on an event-by-event basis.
- Whenever possible, color-correct and widely distribute a very few of the very best frames immediately, to pre-empt the arrival of galleries of un-corrected proofs.
- Contribute to the strategic, conceptual, stylistic direction for campaigns based on client objectives, understanding core constituencies, maintaining the University brand, and utilizing creative expertise to ensure top quality communications.
- Work toward office-wide recruitment goals to determine the best creative strategy to reach key objectives.
- Attend staff and client meetings.
- Plan, strategize, trouble-shoot and review needs and solutions for wide range of clients.
- Work collegially with staff and clients in a team environment.
- Occasional preparation of cost estimates, shooting agendas, and job status reports.
- Provide in-house expertise for editing/color-correcting image files and for effective use of industry software.
- Provide photo selects to and occasionally maintain photography for social media sites.
- Occasionally, conduct file searches for clients/staff and prepare duplication orders to outside vendors.
- Occasionally, scan file negatives or optimize image files for rush jobs, when part-time scanning technician is absent.
Position Requirements
- Some evening and weekend hours required.
- This position is hybrid. Incumbent works on-site and remote based on a set schedule.
Required Qualifications
- Associate’s Degree in photography or relevant field PLUS three (3) years of full-time experience producing professional photographs.
- Excellent written communication skills, as evidenced by application materials.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience using the Adobe Creative Suite.
- Experience with color correction.
- Experience with high-resolution image management.
- Experience producing digital photographs for institution of higher learning, non-profit or charitable foundation.
- Experience in reportage style photography as well as stylized, art-directed shoots.
- Customer service experience.
- Experience multi-tasking in deadline driven environment.
- Experience trouble shooting/solving problems.
- Project management experience.
