Description

BE A MAKER

At Simpson Strong-Tie, there’s a common thread connecting the people who work here: the drive to make things better and figure out how to get it done. We call it the Maker mindset. For over 60 years, our employees have fostered a collaborative workplace where people are engaged in creative thinking from the first day on the job onward. No matter what role you’re in — from production, to sales, to engineering — you’ll contribute to the growth and success of the company by having a Maker mindset.

When you think of the best a family has to offer — support, collaboration and respect — that's what we value. When there's a win, we'll cheer you on. When there's a snag, coworkers step in to help you out. Working on solutions together is just the way we do things here, and that creates an atmosphere that often feels like home.

You'll work alongside talented, passionate, dedicated, humble and genuinely kind people who are all contributing to our shared mission: to provide solutions that help people design and build safer, stronger structures. It's this mission and our strong people-focused values that have made Simpson Strong-Tie a unique place to work — a place where you can connect, create and build your career. We invite you to learn more about our culture and why our employees are our most loyal customers.

YOU

You want to be an important member of a strong team of other makers who take pride in their work and support each other. As a Web Product Designer on the Simpson Strong-Tie Digital Team, you’ll tackle complex UX and data-visualization problems to serve the needs of our customers both internally and externally. You will be a part of a cross-functional team, collaborating with front-end engineers, project managers, and subject matter experts to build world-class user experiences. Additionally, you’ll also help to mentor and lead other members of our growing design team. This is a hands-on creative role, supporting the user experience of multiple digital products, single-page web applications, and websites. This position reports to the Lead UX Product Designer. That’s year one. If career growth is important to you, we not only know how to help you with that, it’s what we love to do: https://youtu.be/PUqzuWryYcU.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING (% of Time)

UX Product Design (60%)

Create prototype design concepts and features in collaboration with other designers, product managers and engineers. Work cross-functionally with stakeholders to understand the business and customer needs, while leveraging data and analytics to inform the design decisions. Develop specifications, wireframes, and prototypes to communicate the design vision and continuously conduct research and testing to inform design decisions.

UX Design System (30%)

Help shape our design standards to maintain across product development. Additionally, you will help create a design system for the organization that is a repository of reusable components with clear usage guidelines, shared among designers and developers. This design system’s purpose is to eliminate existing design inconsistencies and improve future workflows for both designers and developers as the company scales up.

UX Research (10%)

Conduct and document user interviews to determine their behaviors, needs, and motivations for upcoming and existing digital products. Communicate with product line stakeholders to understand the business requirements of new product initiatives.

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

If you can do everything listed above, you’ve got what it takes. Perhaps some of the following would be helpful too:

  • 4 years of industry experience as a digital product designer preferred.
  • Ability to articulate design thinking and rationale.
  • Ability to use data to drive your design decisions. Ability to quickly iterate on design solutions with outputs like wireframes, interaction flows, high-fidelity mockups, user stories, screen specs, personas, etc.
  • Strong design sense with regard to layout, color theory, composition, and typography.
  • Knowledge of design thinking methodologies and human-centric approach.
  • Proficient use of relevant UX design and prototyping tools (Figma).
  • Experience in formulating and expressing ideas, creating wireframes and clickable prototypes to validate solutions with stakeholders or customers.
  • Familiarity with JIRA and Confluence.
  • Experience in creating information architectures, data collection and interviews, and analysis of findings and synthesis to streamline the ideas.
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating production-ready visual and interactive product design across web and mobile platforms.
  • Self-starter comfortable working both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Excellent communication skills in spoken and written English.
  • Experience with designing wireframes, user flows, interactions, and experiences that are simple, intuitive, and consistent.
  • Experience with conducting usability studies, UX research, and competitive research.
  • Experience with rapid prototyping as a means to quickly explore, iterate, and convey design solutions to solve difficult UX problems.
  • Be an advocate for design thinking and help promote its use throughout the organization.
  • Be a good steward of the design system and suggest new components as needed.
