TITLE: Jr Sr High School Visual Arts Teacher

REPORTS TO: Building Principal

JOB FUNCTION: The teacher shall serve as education leader of his/her classroom.

DISTRICT DESCRIPTION: Houghton Lake Community Schools has approximately 1,200 students and is located in the center of the Lower Peninsula in northern Michigan. Our families enjoy the benefits of living in an area thriving on tourism and most of our district surrounds beautiful Houghton
Lake. There are approximately 75 school of choice students from outside of the district. The district is fiscally stable with a growing fund balance. Currently, about 17% of our students qualify for special education services.

The District has two preschool GSRP classrooms in partnership with the HLUMC, with additional preschools available within the community. There is one PreK-6th grade elementary school, one
7th-12th grade Jr Sr High School, and one Community Education building housing our alternative education and GED programs. Career and technical education opportunities are available as well as access to AP Courses and numerous Dual Enrollment college courses.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

● Establish a classroom structure that values positive relationships through intentional implementation of the district curriculum and the vision of high-quality instruction.

● Establish a classroom culture that supports non-academic needs of all students in order to remove barriers that interfere with academic success.

● Establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities.
● Plan, prepare and deliver lessons and instructional materials that facilitate active learning.
● Develop and deliver schemes of work, lesson plans and assessments that are in accordance with the district approved curriculum, if applicable.
● Observe and evaluate each student’s performance and development.
● Instruct and monitor students in the use of learning materials and equipment.
● Use relevant technology to support and differentiate instruction.
● Encourage and monitor the progress of individual students, provide appropriate feedback on work, and use information to adjust teaching strategies according to student need.
● Maintain accurate and complete records of students’ progress and development.
● Update all necessary records accurately and completely as required by laws, district policies and school regulations.
● Communicate necessary information regularly to students, colleagues, and parents regarding student progress and student needs.
● Participate in collaborative and collegial department/grade level, school, district, and parent meetings.

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:
● Must possess a valid Michigan Teaching Certificate in Visual Arts Education (LQ) K-12

Preferred:
● Previous classroom teaching experience in Arts Education
● Certification in other subject areas
