The Virginia Department of Labor and Industry (DOLI) is seeking a highly motivated and skilled professional to work as VOSH Regional Safety Director. Through your actions as a leading member of Virginia’s Occupational Safety and Health (VOSH) team, you will help save lives and prevent injuries and illnesses in the workplace. The Central Virginia Regional Office (Henrico County):
The Central Virginia Regional Office provides service to businesses and employees in the counties of Amelia, Brunswick, Buckingham, Caroline, Charles City, Chesterfield, Cumberland, Dinwiddie, Essex, Fluvanna, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico, King & Queen, King George, King William, Lancaster, Louisa, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Middlesex, New Kent, Northumberland, Nottoway, Powhatan, Prince Edward, Prince George, Richmond, Spotsylvania, Westmoreland, and the cities of Colonial Heights, Hopewell, Petersburg, and Richmond.
Duties and responsibilities:
As VOSH Regional Safety Director, you will plan, direct, manage and evaluate all daily activities of VOSH Safety Compliance regional operations and staff, including administrative staff. You will ensure consistent interpretation and application of federal and state laws, regulations, and agency policies and operational procedures; conduct safety informal conferences; negotiate settlement agreements with employers; allocate resources and develop budget recommendations; develop and implement training and activities in support of agency mission and strategic plan; identify trends and patterns related to workplace injuries and illnesses; align staffing resources to address critical needs; work with agency leadership to establish objectives, goals, and priorities for the region; and supervise and train safety compliance officer apprentices.
Minimum Qualifications
- Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of occupational safety and health
- Considerable practical experience with occupational safety and health state and federal standards
- Considerable knowledge of and experience with policy research, development. Implementation, and assessment
- Experience managing professional, clerical, and technical staff
- Ability to plan, organize, implement, and direct a regional program
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
- Proficient with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams
Preferred Qualifications:
- A degree in the areas of occupational safety or occupational health management, industrial engineering, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
- Certification in a safety or health discipline issued by a recognized organization such as the Board of Certified Safety Professionals or the Board for Global EHS Credentialing, including Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industry Hygienist (CIH), Certified Safety Manager (CSM), Occupational Health and Safety Technologist (OHST), Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST), or similar
- Considerable progressively responsible experience in the management of large programs, preferably occupational safety and/or health
- Experience working in, supervising, or managing OSHA or state plan activities
- Experience as a safety professional in a private or public sector environment
- Familiarity with OSHA sampling techniques and basic exposure assessments

- Possession or ability to obtain a valid Virginia driver’s license within 30 days of hire.
- Ability to travel overnight occasionally.
- Must meet minimum duty requirements for the position as measured by the Agency’s Job Function Analysis
- The selected candidate must successfully pass a criminal background investigation, complete and submit an annual Statement of Personal Economic Interests, and successfully serve a 12-month probationary period effective from the date of employment if beginning employment as an original hire or re-employment
The starting annual salary is $85,000 or higher commensurate with experience and education, plus the State’s benefits package. Please note that salary is only negotiable within the approved budget amount. Interview candidates may be required to demonstrate the skills and abilities necessary for satisfactory performance of work.
