Duties/Responsibilities:
This position exists to weld as needed in the construction, installation, modification, and repair of the University of Tennessee Knoxville’s plumbing, sewer, storm sewer, gas, steam infrastructure facilities, hand rails, platforms, other welding as required and to insure the continued safe and reliable distribution and discharge of utility pipe lines to the Campus. The Welder performs and coordinates welding activities using heliarc, shielded metal arc, and oxy-acetylene welding equipment, welding on various materials including high pressure steam line work, and general campus repairs. The Welder I will also assist other shops and departments as directed on campus in the performance, and completion, of various projects as needed to ensure the highest possible level of customer satisfaction.
Minimum Qualifications:
Applicant must have, and maintain, a valid State of Tennessee Driver’s License.
Three (3) years of experience I welding, or three (3) years in pipe welding experience.
The applicant must be computer literate or able to learn the computer skills needed to perform the duties of the position.
Position requires the ability to organize, prioritize and perform under extreme pressure in both a public contact and internal departmental capacity. The ability to work with peers in the performance of their duties in a highly technical and sometimes hazardous and hectic environment. Also the ability, and the willingness, to follow instructions and learn from peers. Must have the skills and abilities to understand technical problems in the welding and repair of plumbing and piping systems and components. Must be skilled in the use of all welding equipment and tools associated with welding work. Must have the ability to interact with others in an efficient and responsible manner and have the ability to determine what materials and resources are needed to complete the work assignments.
Applicant must be able to work with supervision and work well with others, must demonstrate good attendance habits, be dependable, and be willing to work flexible schedules as necessary; including being on call 24/7 status. Must become familiar with, and observe, all safety requirements, university work rules, and state and federal regulations.
