POSITION DESCRIPTION

POSITION: WIC Program Coordinator

Part-time contracted, Non-Exempt position

LOCATION: KBIC Health Systems

Baraga, Michigan 49908

SUPERVISORY CONTROL: Health Promotions Coordinator

SALARY: Contracted

MANDATORY ANNUAL REQUIREMENTS:

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor degree in a health-related profession such as dietetics, nutrition or nursing is required.
  • Licensure in Michigan or must obtain within 30 days of hire.
  • Must be an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) or earn certification within a set timeframe.
  • Must have home visit curriculum certifications (currently Family Spirit curriculums) or be able to earn certifications within a set timeframe.
  • Must be willing to travel (local and out of town).
  • Must be willing to work occasional evenings/weekends.
  • Ability to maintain accurate and confidential records.
  • Ability to work with and respect cultural and racial differences.
  • Experience in business or management.
  • Must have experience with program planning, evaluation and budgeting.
  • Community/ public health, outreach and program coordination experience.
  • Working knowledge of general office and clerical practices, good organizational, verbal, and written skills, and strong computer skills, including word processing and electronic file management.
  • Must have a valid, unrestricted Driver’s License, reliable transportation, and valid vehicle insurance, and be insurable to operate fleet vehicles. *Must sign KBIC Driving Record Check form.
  • Applicant must provide proof of full COVID-19 immunization with application, unless the Applicant has a qualifying medical condition or disability or has a sincerely held religious belief, practice, or reason for not receiving the immunization. If the Applicant is seeking either a religious or medical exemption, Applicant must fill out the proper exemption form to the Personnel Department.
  • Must be able to obtain a satisfactory clearance in accordance with the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act Background Investigations Policy.

· Employment is contingent upon the satisfactory result of a Security Background Check, pre-employment drug testing, COVID vaccination, and pre-employment physical.

INDIAN PREFERENCE: Preference will be given to qualified individuals of American Indian descent.

VETERAN PREFERENCE: Preference will also be given to qualified Veterans who do not have bad conduct or dishonorable discharges (need DD214).

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordinates the completed administration and management of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community Tribal WIC Program servicing the Keweenaw Bay, Lac Vieux Desert Indian Communities.
  • Assures the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community WIC Program follows all mandated Michigan Department of Public Health guidelines, rules, and regulations. Provides Program consultation to the assigned State of Michigan WIC Consultant.
  • Must pass Michigan Department of Public Health audit. Must complete audit required actions within the mandated time frame.
  • Prepares an annual program budget. Maintains budgetary expenditures, for the fiscal year time frame, and amends budget as necessary.
  • Maintains assigned recipient caseload. Provides continual on-going outreach, publicity, and advertising to increase awareness and caseload.
  • Completes all administrative program contracting, record-keeping and documentation. Including required reporting, like monthly reports to supervisor regarding services provided.
  • Researches prepare and write each fiscal year the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community WIC Program Local Agency Plan of Operation.
  • Completes nutrition assessments, develops nutrition plans, and provides nutrition education to WIC Program recipients using an established protocol. Completes the Nutrition Services plan for MDCH.
  • Assist the Registered Dietitian as necessary to complete the WIC Program Nutrition education component.
  • Determines WIC applicant’s medical/nutritional needs, income, and program eligibility for the WIC program.
  • Performs and charts anthropometric and hematological measurements and assesses health and dietary history.
  • Keeps an inventory, monitors, and distributes WIC debit cards.
  • Assigns and documents risk code(s) with documentation where applicable, initiating problem list for high-risk participants, and refers to a registered dietitian for individual counseling and car plan development.
  • Assigns and documents participant food packages, standard or tailored.
  • Determines the need for and authorizes Class I-B, II-A, II-B formulas. Requests MDPH WIC Division approval for the Class III formula.
  • Maintains WIC appointment system for monthly clinics, certification, secondary/special encounters, recertification, and benefit pick-up.
  • Promotes and documents immunizations per guidelines for participants enrolled in the Maternal Child Health Programs.
  • Attends and participates in case management, consortia, and departmental and team meetings, as well as additional training, networking conferences/meetings, etc. as directed by supervisor. Some out of town travel may be required.
  • Must be aware of community resources related to Health & Human Services, Maternal Child Health, and Family Support.
  • Must be knowledgeable of, and maintain compliance with, mandatory reporting laws for children at risk, and state-mandated compliance with WIC chart context.
  • Manages information by documenting data gathered and services provided in accordance with policies and procedures; including electronic and paper documentation.
  • Assists Maternal Child Health staff in the development of culturally appropriate MCH materials and programs that incorporate Native American culture and values.
  • As an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), will serve as lead breastfeeding technical support expert and will be responsible for compliance with MI-WIC IBCLC Breastfeeding Staff Policy.
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
