About Our Job
This is an on-call (seasonal) position which will work no more than 39 hours per week and is not eligible for benefits. On-call positions may have routine or variable work schedules. This is a seasonal position lasting approximately 6-9 months.
Denver Parks and Recreation is currently seeking an energetic and experienced professional who enjoys working outdoors in both Urban and Mountain parks. This on-call Wildlife Management and Outreach Technician position functions independently or as part of a team under the Education and Wildlife Management Program of Denver Park’s in a variety of natural and open spaces, mountain parks and waterways, for the purpose of environmental conservation, establishing and maintaining healthy and sustainable ecosystems through vegetation restoration and enhancements, and wildlife and habitat management.
The Wildlife Management and Outreach Technician position is ideal for entry level and seasoned professionals with an educational background in environmental studies, wildlife conservation, environmental education, forestry, natural resources, or related disciplines and with experience in these fields and line of work. This position is located in the Denver metro area but required to drive citywide and to DPR mountain parks outside of the Denver area.
This position will focus its responsibilities to manage the City’s environmental elements related to wildlife habitats and provide environmental educational opportunities. Job duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Accomplish wildlife management goals:
    • Canada Goose Management Program
    • Beaver Management Strategies
    • Prairie Dog Management
    • Wildlife species monitoring and surveying
    • Environmental Education
    • Wildlife Habitat and Restoration
  • Be a part of the restoration and enhancement of natural landscapes through habitat conservation and restoration
  • Manage Denver Park’s five designated Natural Areas, including Heron Pond, Parkfield, Hentzell, Inspiration Point, and Camp Rollandet, which make up 166 acres of varying native landscape types in the city and require specialized staff expertise in native and invasive vegetation management, restoration, and wildlife biology. These skillsets are integrated within the mountain park system and urban park maintenance to continually restore, maintain, and enhance these important landscapes
  • Perform restoration, cultivation, care, and management within a variety of natural and traditional park landscapes and gardens
  • Assist the Education & Outreach Coordinator with the development of environmental education programming, deliver educational programs such as outdoor classroom presentations, outreach events, partner events, and virtual programs. May assist with curriculum design, program promotion, pre-program communication, development of props and materials, and program evaluation. Organize and maintain education materials
  • Be a responsible and enthusiastic representative of DPR’s Education and Wildlife Management Program
About You
Our ideal candidate will have:
  • At least a 2-year degree in natural resource or open space management, environmental studies, wildlife management, wildlife biology, forestry, environmental education, resilient landscapes or in lieu of a degree, 3 years of experience in a closely related field
  • Weed, vegetation, and wildlife management experience
  • Competent computer skills in Microsoft Office applications
  • Experience working with GIS integrated data collection software
  • Self-motivation, strong organization skills, and production oriented
  • Comfortability working in an independent environment or team setting managing a geographical area for vegetation and wildlife habitat related activities
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with others
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong multi-tasking and time management skills
  • Ability to work in varied terrain and inclement weather with flexible schedules (availability on weekends as needed)
  • Comfortability working with various age groups (children and adults) in an educational setting
