Northwestern State University's Department of New Media, Journalism, and Communication Arts seeks candidates for the Erbon and Marie Wise Endowed Chair. The unclassified, non-tenure track position is for a scholar and/or practitioner with an advanced degree and/or significant professional experience to teach three undergraduate courses per semester in sports media, media writing, sports promotion, and/or sports data analysis. Incumbent will serve as an adviser for students who are interested in the department's sports media concentration and for the ESPN+ production and student media overseen by the department. The position is a renewable nine-month appointment. The start date is August 2023.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Master's degree or higher in related field (extensive professional experience will be considered in lieu of degree); significant professional experience; higher education teaching experience preferred; Appointment remains open until filled. Special consideration given to those with the following:
  • Significant professional experience in one or more areas: sports production, sports photography, general media writing, sports writing, spons promotion, sports marketing, sports data analysis, or related field
  • Demonstrated teaching effectiveness; ability to effectively teach undergraduates courses such as Intro to Sports Media, Sports Communication, and Writing for Mass Media/Sports
  • Demonstrated ability to solicit scholarship and other funding to benefit students and faculty
  • Experience with advising students and/or student media
  • Portfolio of professional experience and writing samples

JOB CONCEPTS:

  • Teach three, three-hour courses each fall and spring; courses include but are not limited to Intro to Sports Media, Sports Communication, Writing for Mass Media/Sports, Writing for Strategic Communication, Sportscasting, Advanced Sports Reporting
  • Advise students about study path, internships, and first-employment opportunities
  • Advise ESPN+ operations and student media
  • Assist the department head in soliciting scholarships and other funding to benefit students and faculty
  • Actively participate in the Department and University's recruiting efforts by — Periodically reaching out to local high schools to make presentations about the department and NSU sports
  • Assisting the organization of department events such as JaM Day, NSide View Day, New Media Student Showcase, etc.
  • Maintain office hours as stipulated by the department head
