The Center for the Pacific Asian Family (CPAF, United Through Love) is a non-profit organization recognized nationally for its pioneering work in domestic violence and sexual assault. CPAF’s multi-lingual and multi-cultural services include a 24-hour hotline, short-term and long-term shelters, counseling, case management, and supportive services. At CPAF, we believe in emphasizing and providing violence prevention programs, outreach, education, and advocacy on the issues of family violence and violence against women, centering on the Asian and Pacific Islander experience. Staff work in environments where children are present and may be called upon to provide support as needed.
Summary Statement
Under the supervision of the Community Program Manager (CPM), the Youth Engagement Specialist (YES) contributes to CPAF’s Community Programs through prevention education, outreach, and mobilization. The YES will facilitate workshops and training in the community on numerous issues that intersect with gender-based violence. Through effective outreach and engagement of the community, the YES will also bring individuals and organizations into CPAF’s mission of building healthy and safe communities. The YES will mentor young leaders who will mobilize and organize in their communities to address and end violence in their communities. The YES will work with various sectors and disciplines including schools and other community-based organizations. CPAF is currently working with two schools and two school districts.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Prevention Education:
- Educate community members on topics of gender-based violence, power, and privilege within the school-based community’s context.
- Adapt lesson plans based on community needs and priorities.
- Support the new initiative of school wide activities for clubs and district wide engagement and activities to promote healthy relationships on school campuses and youth leadership/ambassadorship.
- Coordinate with Community Services team members for supportive services when disclosures of violence occur.
- Track outcomes of prevention efforts through pre-/post- surveys and assist with internal and external reports on prevention efforts when needed.
Outreach and Mobilization:
- Mentor/train youth leaders to become cooperative change agents amongst their peers and within their school and local communities, including project-based leadership activities for campaign months.
- Engage adult school-based stakeholders in discussions to support school-based programming.
- Intercommunicate between youth and CPAF, especially when collaborating with youth on agency events and opportunities (i.e. San Gabriel Valley Youth Summit and CPAF’s annual API Youth Forum).
- Engage community members through CPAF’s website and its other digital platforms including regular posts on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.
- Represent CPAF through network meetings, public forums, presentations, training, etc. as needed.
- Promote agency services and training.
Travel Requirements: Driving is an essential job function for this position in order to conduct community-based outreach, education, and prevention activities. A valid CA driver’s license is required if using an employee’s own vehicle or agency vehicle to perform duties. The employee must show proof of insurance for own vehicle, and must also be eligible for coverage under CPAF’s auto insurance policy.
Teamwork: Provide general support asked of all staff which may include: responding to emergencies, providing hotline or site coverage, providing translation, maintaining a functioning office. Participate in program and organizational development and fundraising, and attend staff and team meetings.
Outreach: Identify/create opportunities to be an ambassador for CPAF’s mission.
Qualifications: The qualified candidate must possess demonstrated knowledge, skill, abilities, and experience in the following areas:
General
- Committed to eliminating intimate partner violence, sexual abuse, and family violence; practices nonviolence, including non-corporal child discipline
- Understands and is aligned with CPAF’s organizational values of Commitment to Nonviolence, Upholding Confidentiality, Self Determination, Teamwork, Continued Development, and Collaboration.
- Understands and appreciates Asian/Pacific Islander cultures; is able to work with diverse communities (race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability, age, gender identity, class, etc.), especially low-income, immigrant, queer, and non-API youth. Bilingual in an Asian or Pacific Islander language is preferred.
- Must submit to DOJ level Live Scan and subsequent arrest notification, national/local sex offender registry check, annual TB test, and annual driving record search
- Must have access to own vehicle.
- Must be based in California and have reliable transportation to and from CPAF headquarters.
Job Execution
- Experience in developing lesson plans, facilitating workshops, conducting community outreaches, and planning/coordinating events strongly preferred
- Experience speaking about and interacting with others around topics that carry a lot of stigmas, especially with layers of cultural context (i.e. body, sex, gender fluidity, sexuality) strongly preferred
- Able to create safe and inclusive spaces and encourage communication without compounding information with opinion, personal belief systems, and judgment
- High aptitude with public speaking and representing the agency in public settings
- Strong work ethic, self-directed and able to coordinate multiple tasks, and highly motivated.
- Able to work well independently and as a member of a team; able to work collaboratively and thrive in a flexible, evolving environment, adapt to situations, and manage change effectively
- Able to effectively and efficiently address crises and problem-solve with open communication
- Able to plan work schedule respective to program needs, including working evenings or weekends if needed.
- Demonstrate excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
- Must complete 65-hour domestic violence/sexual assault certification training within six months of employment.
- This position requires you to directly supervise children without the presence of a legal guardian. As a result, you are a mandated reporter of suspected child abuse under California’s Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) and must become familiar with your obligations and how to carry them out in compliance with other federal and state funding obligations.
