Purpose of the Position

We are looking for an experienced assembly technician to support the Multi-Element Optical System manufacturing team in the Advanced Assembly group of the Thorlabs Advanced Photonics business unit. The ideal candidate works well in a fast-paced team environment, can create and follow detailed assembly processes, takes pride in detail-oriented work, handles production time pressures, and enjoys “hands-on” work. The candidate will primarily focus on manufacturing orders but may work with engineering on product and process development as needed


Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to:

  • Cleaning, handling and assembly of multi-element optics and opto-mechanical systems
  • Cleaning and visual inspection of optical components to laser quality finishes.
  • Proper handling and packaging of critical and fragile optical components.
  • Strict Adherence to existing procedures
  • Contribute to procedure development and improvement
  • Maintenance, and cleaning of manufacturing area
  • Mixing and application of glue and epoxies neatly and in proper amounts
  • Must be a detail oriented person.
  • Must work well in a group atmosphere, and comply with high quality standards.
  • Must maintain a safe and clean working environment; must comply with procedures, policies and regulations.
  • Maintain excellent attendance to ensure position responsibilities are met.

In addition to the essential functions and duties listed above, all positions are also responsible for:

  • Meeting company standards pertaining to quantity and quality of work performed on an ongoing basis, performing all work related tasks in a manner that is in compliance with all Company policies and procedures.
  • Adhering to Company policies, procedures, and directives regarding standards of workplace behavior in completing job duties and assignments.

The Company retains the right to change or assign other duties to this position.


Physical Activities:

Work may be active, could stand or sit for long durations and/or perform repetitious work at times. Exerts up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally. The work areas may be noisy at times.


Qualifications

Experience:

  • 1 - 3 years of experience with optical component assembly
  • Experience handling lenses

Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

Specialized Knowledge and Skills:

  • Must be able to read and follow written assembly procedures.
  • Must be able to use a calculator and be able to be trained to use optical test equipment
  • Must have willingness and ability to quickly learn new processes/procedures.
  • Must have a steady hand with excellent dexterity and eye-hand coordination to inspect, clean and assemble small high precision optics and metal parts using microscope
  • Must be able to shift from one task to another to address changing production priorities.
  • Ability to work independently or with a team in an efficient manner.
  • Strong sense of ownership.
