Position Description

Advertised Job Summary
The University of South Carolina’s Moving Image Research Collections (MIRC), in partnership with USC’s Center for Civil Rights History and Research, welcomes applications for a ten-week, paid internship, focusing on materials from MIRC collections related to the civil rights movement in South Carolina.
The position is offered through the Association of Moving Image Archivists ( AMIA ) Pathways Fellowship Program. The AMIA Pathways Fellowship seeks to support internship applicants from underrepresented communities and of diverse backgrounds and experiences to develop their professional or educational goals in the field of audiovisual archiving.
About the internship:
  • 30 hours per week, for a period of 10 weeks
  • Pay rate: $20/hour
  • Internship term period: summer 2023, beginning in June or July
  • Onsite internships are recommended for the broadest possible range of hands-on experience and instruction, but remote internship options are also available if necessary
  • Intern must be able to commit to the entire 10-week internship term
  • Intern must complete the weekly Pathways professional development activities as a portion of their weekly hours

Projects and tasks:
The internship will focus on MIRC’s Local Television News collections and other relevant collections documenting or pertaining to the civil rights movement in South Carolina. The intern will be exposed to a wide range of activities including archiving, digitizing, cataloguing, and curating film materials in a university-based film archive. The intern may choose to focus on one or more specific areas of activity according to personal interests and goals. Applicants are encouraged to note any preferences or areas of interest in the application cover letter. Possible tasks include:
  • Inspection and processing of film materials, recording technical information, film condition, and transcribing original notes and metadata for inclusion in MIRC’s inventory management system
  • Prepping and scanning films for digitization
  • Creating or updating descriptive metadata records (PBCore) to be included in MIRC’s internal database and online video repository
  • Creating or updating collection level finding aids for inclusion in ArchivesSpace; adding item level records to existing collection finding aids
  • Conducting research and creating blog posts or other content to be shared with patrons online
  • Reviewing footage and editing AI-generated text transcripts to improve accuracy for online accessibility
  • Working with MIRC curators on an ongoing reparative description project to remove and update harmful and/or exclusionary language from catalog records across multiple collections to meet current standards and best practices
  • Learn about, and potentially contribute to, how MIRC footage is incorporated into exhibits and public programs in collaboration with the Center for Civil Rights History and Research
  • Present on internship experience and projects at conferences such as AMIA’s annual conference, and/or other academic conferences and upcoming events organized by the Center for Civil Rights History and Research.

Funding for this position is supported by the University of South Carolina’s Center for Civil Rights History and Research through a grant from the African American Civil Rights Network as administered by the National Park Service, Department of Interior.

The University of South Carolina’s Moving Image Research Collections (MIRC) preserves films and videos produced outside the American feature film industry to make them available to present and future audiences. Established in 1980, MIRC is one of the leading university-based film archives in the country. Its collections include the Fox Movietone News collection and local television newsfilm, regional films and home movies, science and nature films, artists films, industrial and educational films, USC film and video productions, a unique collection of Chinese films, and the United States Marine Corps film repository.

The Center for Civil Rights History and Research was launched in 2015 to chronicle, preserve and share the momentous contributions of South Carolina to the American Civil Rights Movement. In addition, the Center aims to serve as a national model for interdisciplinary work in the area of civil rights research, programming, and advocacy.

Qualifications
Requirements and preferred qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • Applicants should possess an interest in the civil rights movement in South Carolina, as well as an interest in working in the field of audiovisual archiving and preservation, and/or libraries, museums, archives, or cultural heritage institutions, or public history.
  • Interns working onsite should have or be able to arrange lodgings in the Columbia, S.C. area, or have the ability to commute to MIRC. Interns doing remote projects will need computer and reliable internet access.
  • The position requires the ability to work independently and under direction.
  • Previous experience in film archiving is preferred but not required.
