Student Activities, a unit of the Student Union, Activities and Recreation department within Student Affairs at UNC Charlotte, creates student learning and development opportunities that inspire campus involvement and civic engagement.

Venture Outdoor Leadership, a unit of the Division of Student Affairs, uses experiential and adventure education techniques to provide transformative experiences that build character, develop leadership, and improve teamwork. Venture has a long history of facilitating programs based on the Outward Bound Process Model, which is reflected in our mission and vision as an adventure education program.

Primary Purpose of Position
The Assistant Director for Trips is responsible for leading and managing the adventure trips program and climbing wall in collaboration with the Associate Director and Director of Venture Outdoor Leadership. The Assistant Director also teaches academic courses within the Outdoor Adventure Leadership minor. This position supervises student leaders who work with the adventure trips and climbing wall programs, including providing training and feedback. The Assistant Director for Trips also assists with other areas as needed, including a robust team building program.

Summary of Position Responsibilities
Program Management (60%)
Manage the adventure trip program and the indoor climbing wall in collaboration with the Associate Director and Director. This position is the first-line manager for student leaders, including the logistics staff, adventure trip leaders, and climbing wall staff. Adventure trip management will include coordinating both open-enrollment and closed-enrollment trips, maintaining related equipment and vehicles, and assisting with training student staff. Climbing wall management includes coordinating both open climb and academic class climbing times, maintaining the facility and equipment, and training student staff.

Academic Instruction (20%)
The Assistant Director will teach 1 to 3 courses per semester. Academic instruction will include creating/ editing curriculums for the course(s), instructing weekly classes, grading, and providing student feedback. Time outside of weekly class times may be required, such as for a weekend adventure trip, as part of the course curriculum.

Administrative Duties (20%)
Additional administrative duties will include but is not limited to managing expense reports, completing and submitting permits and related documents to vendors, and assuring adventure trip and climbing wall policies and procedures are followed by student staff.

Minimum Education/Experience
  • Master’s degree required.
  • Minimum 2 years work experience, which may include relevant graduate work.
  • Knowledge and practice of diversity, equity, and inclusion, especially as it relates to higher education and adventure education/ outdoor adventure fields.
  • Knowledge and practice of adventure education, experiential learning, or related theories and practices, including the Outward Bound Process Model.
  • Intermediate to advanced skill/ experience in at least 1 adventure activity, such as: white water paddling, rock climbing, caving, or backpacking.
  • Willingness and flexibility to work with students and staff in both structured and unstructured situations including night and weekend work (workweek can be adjusted to account for work outside typical business hours).
  • Strong organization and detail-oriented skills that allow for both planning and flexibility.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Selected candidate is subject to a criminal background check.

  • Experience working with a diverse student body.
  • Instructional/ teaching experience.
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships with diverse individuals.
  • Proven investment in personal and professional growth through a culture of feedback, including to/from students, peers, and supervisors.

Necessary Certifications/Licenses
  • Ability to obtain Wilderness First Responder certification (professional funds available)
  • Ability to obtain certification(s) in trip-related skills such as white water paddling, rock climbing, caving, backpacking, and/ or adventure program risk management (professional funds available)


Preferred Certifications/Licenses
  • Additional certifications with American Mountain Guide Association, Professional Climbing Instructor Association, American Canoe Association, and/or Wilderness Education Associates.
  • Instructor certification(s) for First Aid, CPR, AED, Epi Administration, and/or Wilderness First Aid
