Job description
POSITION SUMMARY: The Assistant Nurse Manager Assistant is responsible for ongoing evaluation and management of patient care systems on the patient care unit for specific shift. Including the further clinical education of the Registered Nurses on his/her unit. Collaborates with the Nurse Manager, integrating nursing services with clinical care at the bedside. The incumbent maintains a safe, therapeutic environment within which professional patient care can be efficiently delivered.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: High School diploma or equivalency. Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing required
Licensure/Certification: Licensed Registered Nurse
Skills, Knowledge or Abilities: Knowledge and ability to operate all medical equipment found in the Clinical Unit. Leadership skills required. Ability and interest in improving the skill of recent RN graduates preferred
Physical Requirements: Position requires standing on feet for long periods of time interspersed with sitting at desk to complete paperwork. Ability to bend, stretch, reach, handle/finger delicate objects. Excellent verbal and auditory skills required for communicating clearly and effectively with patients, physicians, families, care team members, other hospital departments. Manual dexterity required to operate equipment. Near visual acuity required for preparing and reading reports/papers. Ability to cope with physical and emotional stress. Flexibility in scheduling as required per the needs of the department
Experience: At least3-5 years’ experience in specified area.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsible and accountable for planning, directing, and evaluating patient care on a 24 hour basis
- Plans to meet needs of each patient on the collection of subjective and objective data obtained from patient, family, and other staff members
- Assesses patient and family needs and completes admission assessment documentation based on data.
- Identifies immediate and long-range problems
Planning
- Includes the patient and family in formulating the plan of care
- Sets priorities for patient needs
- Able to utilize resource people, Department Leadership; in planning aspects of nursing care.
- Prepares and utilizes a nursing care plan based on assessment.
- Communicates with Care Manager to meet patient’s needs after discharge.
Implementation
- Performs technical skills safely and according to current procedure.
- Demonstrates a working knowledge of equipment, technology, department specific equipment.
- Explains all procedures, treatments, and medications to staff, patient and family.
- Carries out patient and family requests or explains why they cannot be done.
- Is knowledgeable about types of patients conditions most commonly encountered.
- Is knowledgeable about medications, IV solutions, treatments, tests. Can identify purpose, side effects and contraindications.
- Accomplishes and coordinates health teaching for patients and families.
- Writes discharge and/or transfer notes which clearly reflect the patient’s status with regard to health, knowledge, and activity
- Makes decision which reflects sound judgment based on facts
- Anticipates work flow and completes work within allotted time under ordinary circumstances.
Based on the established standards of nursing practice, the Assistant Nurse Manager will evaluate nursing personnel and the care provided
Evaluation
- Evaluates patient’s condition and response to nursing care and revises plan of care.
- Evaluates patient’s response to teaching and documents this evaluation appropriately.
Documentation
- Is accurate, concise, and relevant.
- Reflects patient’s response to interventions
- Uses nursing charting in EMR and downtime paper documents
- Uses appropriate nursing charting format.
Leadership
Nursing Leadership Standard
- Assumes responsibility for patient care in the absence of Nurse Manager.
- Provides assistance to Nurse Manager in directing and administering nursing services.
- Provides direct guidance and assistance to nursing staff in identifying and evaluating patient care in the absence of Nurse Manager.
- Evaluates employees utilizing the performance appraisal tool.
- Reviews sick time on a quarterly basis and counsel’s staff if needed.
- Counsels staff on performance issues as needed
- Plans for effective delivery of patient care, matching patient acuity with available resources.
- Prioritizes patients’ needs and assigns available staff daily based on patient needs.
- Collaborates with Nursing Administration to obtain staff to cover needs.

Staff Development
- Identifies staff development needs in collaboration with Nurse Manager.
- Collaborates with Nursing Education in evaluating orientation process of professional and non-professional nursing staff on specified shift.
- Implements clinical orientation of new employees, matching skills assessment with specific unit objectives; evaluates new employees using performance appraisal tool.
- Supports and guides preceptors together with nursing education
- Serves as a resource person and provides guidance to staff.
- Participates in, and involves staff in unit based performance improvement.
- Encourages and facilitates Nursing unit council meetings.

- The Assistant Nurse Manager will assume responsibility for her own professional and personal growth.
- Demonstrates ability to set objectives, plan for attainment, and assess progress.
