The Jay Weiss Institute (JWI) for Health Equity at the University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center has an opportunity available for an Assistant Scientist in Cancer Health Disparities. The mission of the JWI is to make meaningful progress towards health equity while advancing the science of health disparity through research, community outreach and training. The JWI currently supports several large research projects focusing on cancer disparities, including a U54 and a RO1, funded by the National Cancer Institute. This individual will be responsible for the design and conduct of cancer health disparities research. He or she will work independently designing, carrying out, and critiquing experiments. This individual will have sophisticated knowledge of cancer health disparities, public health and community based participatory research (CBPR). He or she will be able to initiate collaborations with scientists within SCCC and/or community partners. The incumbent will work under the direction of Dr. Erin Kobetz.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsible for developing, adapting, and implementing new research procedures related to assigned projects and team, which includes the following:

  • Design, implement and conduct cancer health disparities research.
  • Perform a variety of complex technical duties involved in conducting data analyses, summarizing research findings for interim grant reports and conducting programmatic evaluations.
  • Assist in the preparation of data and figures for manuscripts and scientific presentations/publications.
  • Present data in research meetings and other venues.
  • Assist with the implementation of new research programs and initiatives.
  • Responsible for orientation and training of new students, and postdoctoral associates.
  • Provide technical supervision to other research staff.
  • Writing reviews and book chapters along with the PI. Assisting the PI in writing grants for funding to the NIH and state agencies.
  • Reviewing manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals.
  • Keep abreast of latest literature in the field and search for references to cancer health disparities and keep up-to-date of the methods and techniques related to the specific field of research.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Department Specific Qualifications

Education:

Ph.D., M.D/Ph.D., or equivalent required in Public Health, Oncology or other related field.

Experience:

One year of relevant post-doctoral experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

Computer skills required.

Excellent skills in English (both verbal and written) required.

Strong commitment to conduct cancer health disparities research.

Must be able to work with minimum direct supervision and independent judgment is required.
