Job description
Incumbent works under the direction of the County Engineer, or designee, operating road construction and maintenance equipment.
- Operate and transport vehicles of all sizes (e.g. single axle trucks, tandem trucks, roller, front-end loaders) completing maintenance and construction tasks.
- Establish and maintain effective work relationships with clients, supervisors, County employees, elected officials, attorneys, law enforcement, judges, other agencies, and the public.
- Comply with Civil Service policies and regulations, collective bargaining agreements, County policies, department policies and laws to create a cooperative, safe, respectful and quality work environment.
- Operate power equipment (e.g. power broom, concrete saw, air compressor, brush chipper, crack router) on County maintained projects.
- Perform routine inspection, required maintenance and minor repairs to equipment.
- Assist in preparation and cleaning of job sites and equipment.
- Report complex mechanical and maintenance repair needs to supervisors.
- Perform skilled and semi-skilled laborer tasks in loading and unloading of trucks.
- Safely operate a motor vehicle when required to travel on County business.
- Report to work with regular, consistent attendance.
- Perform other duties as assigned and directed.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.*
- One (1) year of single axle trucks and construction equipment experience required.
- Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with "air brake certification upon hire and maintained throughout employment required.
- Completion of a pre-employment criminal record check, conditional offer drug screen and physical assessment required.
- Equivalent combination of work experience and education may be substituted for requirements on a year-for-year basis.

- Work is generally performed outdoors in a variety of locations. Noise level is usually moderate. Work hours are typically standard day-shift hours; however, schedule may vary (e.g. days, shifts, weekends, overtime/extra hours, holidays, emergency call-in). Work involves full exposure to the elements and hazards associated with construction zones. Work may be stressful when dealing with time constraints, multiple/changing priorities, limited resources and uncooperative/irate individuals.
- Work requires some physical activity, including extended periods of walking, standing, reaching, occasional climbing, carrying, balancing, kneeling, crouching and bending. Incumbent must have the agility, balance and strength to maneuver over rough terrain, around various obstacles and to access property and construction sites on foot. Work also requires the ability to frequently lift and/or carry objects weighing up to 40 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds.
- Required sensory abilities include vision, hearing and touch. Visual abilities, correctable to normal ranges, include close, distance, color and peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Communication abilities include the ability to talk and hear within normal ranges. Incumbent must possess the hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate computers and other equipment.
