The Upper Mattaponi Indian Tribe is a sovereign nation working to improve the lives of its citizens and build a community. UMIT received federal recognition in 2018, and is expanding capacity rapidly. As a result of increased ability to provide services, UMIT is seeking a Broadband Program Specialist to help the Tribe bridge the digital divide that exists in Indian Country.

Position

The Broadband Program Specialist will be the primary point of contact for Upper Mattaponi citizens seeking assistance from the Tribe regarding access to broadband services, including device purchasing as well as broadband service payment assistance. The Broadband Program Specialist will also support UMIT citizens with sustainable solutions to internet access through case management services. This position is project based, will work approximately 32 hours per week and is eligible for UMIT’s benefit package. This is a grant-funded position and will end when the grant expires in October 2023.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

• Develop and maintain rapport with Tribal citizens seeking assistance from the Tribe regarding broadband services through customer service and outreach.
• Design information technology curriculum for Tribal citizens, provide educational events and seminars regarding use of devices, programs, and services.
• Gain and maintain awareness of devices used to access broadband (i.e. laptops) in order to guide Tribal citizens through device purchasing.
• Complete mandatory trainings and certifications as asked.
• Develop administrative system to ensure the timely payment of broadband services for Tribal citizens.
• Maintain administrative documentation such as purchase receipts, invoices, and case management log.
• Other tasks as asked.

Knowledge, Skills and Ability Qualifications:

• High school degree or equivalent experience.
• Experience working with Tribes and Tribal citizens (strongly preferred).
• Basic knowledge of computers and information technology, especially hardware set up and maintenance, as well as Microsoft Office Suite.

Other Requirements:

Applicants will be required to authorize a background check and submit to drug testing. Failure to do so will disqualify applicant for consideration for the position.

The ideal applicant will be concurrently enrolled in a workforce development program, such as community college or a training program, working towards a certification/degree in an IT related field.
