Job Summary


This is an entry-level position providing custodial services support for university facilities. Employee performs a variety of duties in the care and cleaning of classroom buildings, offices, athletic facilities, dining halls, or other university buildings. Work is guided by a daily schedule for general assignments. Work is routine and repetitive in nature, and is performed subject to close review and inspection, with problems and special assignments not covered by instructions referred to a supervisor. Duties may include physically strenuous activities such as moving furniture, operating cleaning equipment, and delivering large quantities of housekeeping supplies. Duties may include performing housekeeping and floor maintenance tasks, operating laundry services machines and performing special cleaning duties. Employee demonstrates an understanding of and maintains conditions that ensure a healthy and safe environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

Responsibilities


Primary - 65
Performs basic cleaning (sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, dusting, disinfecting, vacuuming, removal of trash and/or replenishing supplies/products) to keep assigned working areas in a clean and orderly condition. Cleans the interior and exterior of buildings, using the appropriate equipment and materials.

Light Maintenance - 5
Responsible for light maintenance work duties within the employee's abilities. These duties may include replacing lamps, light bulbs, smoke alarm batteries; replacing and/or washing HVAC filters; repairing restroom accessories; replacing window screens; unclogging toilets, lavatories, and urinals; locating and stopping leaking faucets; and making minor repairs to drywall, ceilings, flooring; and, painting interior surfaces.

Work Orders - 10
Inspects buildings, fixtures, machines and other structural or mechanical units and notes repair needs using a pre-established checklist. Submits directly by iPad, maintenance requests, using the existing work order system (AiM) and reports major or emergency maintenance needs to the supervisor. Responds to work orders as assigned by the supervisor and submits work requests for work performed without an existing work order. Assists in ensuring compliance with maintenance and custodial policies and procedures.

Special Projects - 15
Recognizes and obtains required tools, equipment, materials, and supplies that are needed to do the job. Maintains proper stock, parts, tools, and safety equipment in the assigned storage areas. Works with others to keep equipment and employee work areas clean and orderly. Works alone or with a team to complete special assignments related to indoor and outdoor cleaning projects, setting up tables and chairs, providing cleaning and porter services at special events, or other tasks as assigned by a supervisor or Assistant Director.

Training and Safety - 5
Participates in department-provided training and learning opportunities to develop work-related skills and abilities. Completes all required training on a timely basis. Recognizes and follows prescribed safety procedures and regulations while following all NFPA, ADA codes and regulations. Performs all work in accordance with established safety procedures. Assists in ensuring a safe working environment throughout the residential facilities for all employees and residents. Reports all accidents and injuries in a timely manner. Participates in regular safety meetings, safety training and hazard assessments.

Required Qualifications


Educational Requirements
Some high school classes

Other Required Qualifications
Valid driver's license.

Required Experience
Six months' experience working in custodial or environmental services in a school or hospital setting.
Basic knowledge of the operation and use of equipment and tools used in the care and cleaning of buildings. Basic knowledge of custodial services, practices, techniques, and procedures.

Preferred Qualifications


Preferred Educational Qualifications
High school diploma or GED equivalent.

Preferred Experience
Six months' experience working in custodial or environmental services in a school or hospital setting.
Basic knowledge of the operation and use of equipment and tools used in the care and cleaning of buildings. Basic knowledge of custodial services, practices, techniques, and procedures. Valid driver's license.

Proposed Salary


$14.36 hourly

KNOWLEDGE
Basic knowledge of cleaning methods and materials. Understand and comply with safety regulations and handling hazardous materials in the performance of job duties (i.e. OSHA, EPA).

SKILLS
Basic computer skills including email, web browser, and mobile devices. Maintains written records or checklists. Must be able to complete tasks efficiently within a designated time frame. Must be able to learn procedures and retain information. A valid driver's license is required.

Communication: Must be able to follow oral and written instructions. Listens to instructions and asks necessary questions to complete tasks. Communicates with fellow workers in a manner that allows work to be completed efficiently and effectively at a high standard.

Customer Service and Hospitality: Attentive to the needs of residents and responds according to standard operating procedures, displaying a positive demeanor and helpful attitude at all times. Effectively listens and responds to customer needs and understands the role of customers in the work environment.

Stewardship: Observes quality and condition of the facilities, reports or corrects deficiencies, and contributes to continuous improvement and high standards of quality. Respectful of students' privacy and property. Always courteous and helpful with building occupants, i.e. greets the building occupants and students, and can answer their questions and/or refer them to the appropriate person.
