Carpenter
Polar Fields Services Inc. in Raven Camp, Greenland is looking to hire a Carpenter. We pay $1,900 - $2,364/ weekly and provide great benefits including Hourly Health & Welfare benefit credit applied to first 40 hours worked each week. Currently an additional $4.22/hour included in weekly rate. ($168.80/weekly).
Job Summary:
Carpenter performs skilled carpentry work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of National Science Foundation (NSF) funded facilities and equipment in the Arctic by accomplishing hands-on carpentry tasks on maintenance and construction projects as needed.
The Typical Schedule
- This is a seasonal position. Deployments vary in length and usually occur between March through September.
- The work week is 54 hours, typically 9-hour days, 6 days per week. When deployed to a field camp setting the work week is 63 hours, 9 hours per day, 7 days per week. Schedule may vary based on location, weather conditions and work requirements.
- Must be willing and able to work varied schedules, up to 12+ hours per day, including split-shift, part-time, early mornings/evenings, and weekends

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Participate in daily tasks, safety meetings and morning pre-task stretching.
- Proactive about maintaining a safe working environment.
- Performs construction related tasks in harsh, adverse and undevelopedremote environments. Must be willing to work outside on various job sites in extreme cold weather conditions.
- Read blueprints, plans, and specifications and draft sketches for building concepts.
- Performs tasks requiring repeated heavy lifting, pushing, pulling, digging, hauling, standing, walking, kneeling, stooping, and squatting.
- Safely operate and maintain power saws, drills, routers and other power or hand tools used in rough and finish carpentry.
- Performs hands-on carpentry of tasks from rough framing to finish carpentry utilizing a variety of materials and tools on maintenance and construction projects.
• Assemble structural steel, floors, walls, and roof framing for new and existing construction. • Install floor tiles, carpeting, drywall, drywall mud, hardware, paint, and other building materials.
- Erect and dismantle portable buildings, tents, and other structures.
- Fabricate specialized cabinets, crates, scientific components, and furniture.
- Repair and/or modify existing structures and equipment.
- Advise immediate Supervisor of job progress and material/labor requirements
- May direct the work of Trades Helpers and/or occasionally utilize the assistance of other station personnel to complete tasking or assist other trades or departments with their tasking.
• Maintain accurate and thorough documentation of hours worked, tasking performed, materials used, and processes involved. • Perform materials/tools inventory and recommend materials/tools for future tasking.
- Plan projects and create material take offs as needed.
- Maintains and updates inventory records and materials usage.
- Coordinates materials and support from other departments.
- Drive a truck, snowmobile and/or other polar vehicles.
- Participate in camp set-up which may include moving gear from transport to camp site, placing tent platforms, erecting tents, setting ski-way markers, building cargo loads as well as assist with station/camp operations, maintenance, shoveling and house mouse (cleaning community spaces) tasking as required or assigned.
- Complies with applicable safety, environment, health, and waste management policies and procedures.
- Maintain a clean and hazard free workspace, in the workshop, on the jobsite and around outside storage yards.
- Uphold NSF's Principles for Conducting Fieldwork in the Arctic
- Other duties as assigned or required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum of four years of documented experience in most phases of carpentry.
- This to include rough framing, (wood/steel stud framing, layout, and construction of stairs, floors, walls and roofs), and finish carpentry (roofing, partitions, door and window installation, shelves, cabinets, stairs and handrails, counters, benches, ramps, exterior siding, trim etc.).
- Ability to read design drawings and build to plans specifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid Driver's License
- Valid Passport
Preferred Experience:
- Experience with commercial/industrial facility construction
- Experience accomplishing metal stud framing and drywall hanging and finishing
- Previous experience living and working in a small field camp setting
- Previous experience with remote, cold and/or polar experience
- Previous accredited OSHA and First Aid training courses

Physical Requirements:
- Deployment will be required in this position. The individual in the position may need to successfully complete the physical and dental examinations as required by the NSF for deploying to Greenland. Failure to meet these requirements may result in withdrawal of employment offer or other employment action.
- Job tasks may include physical activities such as standing for extended periods of time (up to 12 hours, walking, lifting and/or carrying an object more than 50 pounds, climbing, balancing, crouching, stooping or kneeling, and/or repetitive motions.

Travel:
- This position requires travel and is located at various hub bases and field camps within Greenland. PFS pays for all expenses while in and travelling to and from the worksite.
- Typical round-trip travel may involve the following: o Commercial air from Airport of Departure (AOD) to Albany, NY or AOD to hub base in Greenland o Air National Guard (ANG) flight from Scotia, NY (Stratton AFB) to Kangerlussuaq, Greenland or AMC (Air Mobility Command) flight from BWI (Baltimore, MD) to Thule AFB o Flight from hub base in Greenland to Field Camp location- may be via an ANG flight, Bassler, Twin Otter or helicopter flight depending upon location.
- Travel to, from, and within Greenland is weather dependent and which often may cause flight delays.
- ANG, AMC, and commercial flights may be rescheduled due to circumstances outside of PFS's control.
- Flight departure and return dates are not guaranteed.
Working Environment/Conditions:
- Due to living and working in a small, communal environment, you must be able to establish and maintain effective relationships with others during and after working hours.
- When travelling and working at field sites, employees will sleep in insulated huts, dorms, tents, hotels, or other types of community housing. At times these sleeping conditions could be extremely cold (below –20 F) or hot (above 80 F).
• You should expect a roommate during all deployments. • Food may come from restaurants, be self-made or provided by a cook; options may be limited.
- Showers, laundry, and other common amenities may be restricted or not available for periods of time due to unforeseen circumstances such as power/water restrictions, equipment maintenance or system failure.
• Required to perform strenuous work outside, possibly at high elevation on various jobs in extreme cold weather conditions for long hours. • Outdoor working conditions are challenging, and temperatures may be extreme and exceed -40F.
- Primary transport around station is by walking but may include snow machines, trucks, and other polar vehicles.
- Medical facilities are limited to onsite medic and/or virtual health care.
- Basic telephone and internet services may be limited or non-existent at times.
- Work environments may include exposure to confined spaces and/or to edges requiring fall restraint.
