Description:

Flexible evening Hours. Anywhere from 5pm-1130pm (4–5-hour shifts) a few days a week with Rotating holidays and every 9th weekend.

The primary purpose of the Central Sterilization Technician is to collect, decontaminate, inspect, process, assemble, and sterilize surgical instruments. The CST will also be responsible for cleaning reusable medical devices and patient care equipment according to established standards and procedures to ensure sterile and functioning supply of materials and equipment. The CST has a strong understanding of medical terminology, infection control standards, and following policies/procedures according to American National Standard.

The age of this customer is young to older adult.

Customers include co-workers, vendors, and other medical personnel.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State and local laws and regulations, Trinity Health’s Organizational Integrity Program, Standards of Conduct, as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical and professional behavior. Cleans and decontaminates patient use items by taking apart instruments, rinsing and soaking instruments and using washing/sterilizing equipment. Assembles, packages, and/or terminally sterilizes patient use items. Keeps required records such as biological testing records and unit checks for outdated packages. Performs required environmental and/or equipment maintenance procedures. Performs other duties as assigned. Takes an active role in improving quality of service provided by department. Performs other duties consistent with purpose of job as directed.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Must be able to adapt to repetitive, short cycle operations. Must be able to organize and prioritize work. Must have some mechanical ability to operate large equipment and to disassemble and assemble instruments. Must be able to work well with others. Demonstrates knowledge and support for the principles of good guest relations in their daily activities and contacts with others.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The working conditions are cool and noisy. In a normal working day, an employee will stand 4 hours, walk 3 hours, and sit 1 hour. Job requires bending, stooping, reaching, pushing, and pulling and lifting. (30%-50% of work time) Job requires employee to lift/carry 25 pounds. (20%-30% of work time) Job requires the use of hands for fine manipulation. Job requires working around contaminated supplies. Job involves exposure to toxic chemicals and ethylene oxide. Must be able to see at a near visual acuity level. Must be able to speak and hear speech. Must adhere to applicable organizational requirements on an annual basis for Employee Health Directives.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

High school education required. One-year previous sterilization experience preferred. Certified Registered Central Service Technician required within 2 years of hire.
