Position Summary:
Laboratory functions – collects specimens on all ages of the population. Collects blood specimens using venipuncture skin puncture, or appropriate technique, maintaining the integrity of the specimen in relation to the tests performed. Instructs patient or parent regarding collection of urine or other specimens. Performs urinary catheterizations to obtain urine specimens as ordered by the physician. Verifies proper patient/specimen identification, integrity, and appropriateness of specimen container, accompanying orders, and proper labeling in front of patients when appropriate. Ensures proper labeling and storage of all specimens. Manages the processing, ordering, and transport of tests to external laboratories according to established procedures including electronic registration in external laboratory system, preparation of specimen for transport, proper storage of specimen, and notification of external laboratory. Tracks all laboratory tests sent to external laboratories, follows up on missing results, and reports all results to the physician. Performs basic CLIA waived laboratory tests and instrument quality control testing under the supervision of the nurse in charge and/or clinic laboratory medical director. Organizes laboratory workflow and appropriately prioritizes processing, testing, and handling of specimens to be sent to external laboratories.
Clinical functions - tasks include taking medical histories and recording vital signs, explaining treatment procedures to patients, preparing patients for examinations, and assisting physicians during examinations and procedures. Sterilizes medical instruments, disposes of contaminated supplies and other biohazardous waste according to established protocol, and assist s the nurse in emptying and packaging full sharps containers and biohazardous containers. Prepares and administers vaccines/injections according to physician orders. Performs electrocardiograms and pulmonary function tests, administers inhalation therapy, removes sutures, applies bandages, changes dressings, and performs other first aid procedures. Performs IV fluid administration as ordered by the physician while ensuring the use of appropriate technique. Documents actions and patient care services promptly and accurately in the electronic medical record following established standards and procedures. Assists in facilitating patient flow by assessing work to be done, anticipating patient, nurse, and physician needs, taking action to expedite the delivery of patient services. Escorts patients back to the clinical area and prepares them to see the physician. Cleans rooms and prepares for the next patient, setting up equipment for special procedures and tests. Assists the nurse in charge with maintaining inventory of clinical, laboratory, and house-keeping supplies.
Administrative functions - Provides back-up support for the Patient Services staff including such activities as greeting patients, registering patients, answering phones, scheduling appointments, assisting patients with registration forms, giving patient instructions, processing mail, scheduling follow-up visits, and completing patient “check out”.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
A minimum of two years of experience working in a healthcare setting with similar responsibilities is preferred.
Knowledge of OSHA safety standards, infection control, biohazardous waste management, sterile technique, medication administration, first aid techniques, medical terminology, and general medical office operations and procedures.
Must have excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Must be proficient with using a computer, including expertise with specialized software such as practice management and electronic medical records.
Must thrive in a fast-paced team environment and be willing to work cooperatively with and under the supervision of other healthcare professionals.
Proficiency in both English and Spanish languages with experience in medical translation is highly desired.
Required Education, Licenses, and Certifications:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Diploma or Certificate Program Medical Assisting
- REGISTERED MEDICAL ASSISTANT Or CMA. Acceptable organizations are: AMT – American Medical Technologists; AAH – American Allied Health; AAMA – American Association of Medical Assistants; MEDCA – Medical Career Assessments or ARMA – American Registry of Medical Assistants.
- Current BLS required
Other Information:
Must be able to see, hear, read and have manual ability to use office and clinical equipment. Effectively communicate to patients, family members, personnel, and physicians. Position involves standing, walking, bending, and lifting. Position may involve skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious material.
