The Clinical Nurse Coordinator oversees clinical operations in conjunction with the Nurse Manager on the Innovation Center. Instructs clinical staff to facilitate the delivery of nursing care to patients on the Innovation Center.

Principal Responsibilities


The Clinical Nurse Coordinator:

  • Assists with overseeing the functions of clinical staff including RN’s, Patient Care Technicians and Unit Assistants, ensuring efficient use of staffing resources to meet patient needs.
  • Ensures practice procedures and protocols comply with the SRAlab policies and regulatory standards.
  • Assists Nurse Manager with designing and implementing quality improvement projects, audits, etc.
  • Contributes to annual performance evaluations and development of clinical staff.
  • Serves as an advanced clinician with specialty competence such as IV insertion, ventilator management, or ventricular assistance devices.
  • Manages patient flow on the Innovation Center Unit (admissions/discharges/transfers).
  • Provides guidance to staff in emergency situations on the unit.
  • Participates in nursing research studies and applies results and concepts to the clinical practice when appropriate.
  • May serve as a resource to provide nursing assessment, intervention and evaluation of patients participating in therapy and/or research.
  • Performs all other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.


Required Skills

Required Experience
  • BSN or specialty certification.
  • Current Illinois license to practice as a Registered Nurse.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Minimum 3 years of professional nursing experience in a hospital setting required.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience as a charge nurse, clinical instructor, preceptor, or clinical certification preferred.
  • Possesses the specialized knowledge and clinical skills necessary to oversee the care provided for people with physical disability and chronic illness.
  • Understanding the growth and development of infant, child, adolescent, young adult, middle-aged adult and geriatric patients
  • Able to act in accordance with professional practice standards and the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses.
  • Demonstrates a high level of initiative and creative problem solving.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking skills to monitor and respond to patient and staff needs.
  • Ability to work as a team member with the medical team, allied health professionals, and researchers in order to promote patient experience, maximize patient outcomes, and identify and address issues.
  • Working knowledge of electronic tools including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel and organization based programs such as Concerro and ADP.
  • Possesses ability to communicate verbally and in writing, information/presentations to a wide variety of audiences and responds to communications in a timely and thoughtful manner.
  • Ability to maintain confidential/HIPPA information.
  • Ability to maintain current on clinical practices and developments
  • Possess ability to transfer and position patients consistent with lifting up to 35 lbs.

Reporting Relationships


Reports directly to the Nurse Manager.


Working Conditions


  • Normal office environment with little or no exposure to dust or extreme temperature.
