Position Description
This position requires the individual to create, approve, edit and qualify CNC programs for use on metal cutting equipment (lathe, 3,4,& 5 axis machining centers & multi-axis turning), develop detailed work illustration instructions and configurations using Siemens Unigraphics 3D NX CAD software.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Creates instructions for machinist
- Ability to model to create program
- Create model based CNC program
- Utilize multiple CNC programming software to create CNC program
- Ability to utilize simulation software to prove out CNC programs
- Create DNC file to store & make CNC program available
- Vast knowledge of modern machining principles/methodology
- Background in operation of CNC machines
- Updated knowledge of state of the art tooling
- Ability to communicate & teach
- Reviews 3D CAD design blueprints
- Makes calculations for programming including where materials should be cut
- Translates instructions into a computer automated manufacturing (CAM) program
- Communicates with engineers and clients who will use the programs
- Checks completed programs by running simulations or tests
- Prepares geometric layout of designs using proper software
- Determines sequence of operations in a program
- Chooses cutting tools that will be needed
- Analyzes job order and performs necessary calculations
- Writes programs and modifies existing ones for increased efficiency
- Analyzes and selects speeds and cutting tools for programs
- Makes improvements to set up times for a task and contouring of complex shapes
- Simplifies tooling time for workers and increases productivity for the client
- Evaluates all completed designs to validate their functions and ensure they successfully
reduce time and money for the client
- Monitors all programs to make sure they follow blueprint instructions and safely and
successfully complete the task
- Provides training for clients on automated systems

Summary:
The Product Engineer – Actuation will have a key leadership role in technology research and breakthrough product development. He or She will have responsibility for delivering strategic design and development goals in electromechanical actuation to grow current and capture future business opportunities. This position reports directly to Engineering Management. The Product Engineer - Actuation will reside in the UmbraGroup Michigan / Thomson Aerospace & Defense facility located in Saginaw, Michigan.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Along with those identified below, other duties may be assigned.
- Lead design, development, analysis, testing and implementation of breakthrough electromechanical actuation technologies
- Work with Aerospace and Defense customers to understand their needs and development of integrated electromechanical actuation assemblies based on linear and rotary motion technology that differentiate UGM / Thomson Aerospace & Defense from the competition
- Advance UGM / Thomson Aerospace & Defense’s use of analytical tools and testing methods
- Design, conduct, and analyze laboratory testing of new products
- Prepare and deliver technical proposals, seminars and papers to industry as a “technical expert” in the field of electromechanical actuation, ball screws, and motion systems.
- Travel as necessary
- Work with design and process teams to identify, investigate and implement state of the art materials, design improvements and manufacturing processes
- Independently manage cross-functional project teams for new technology or product developments
Qualifications:
- Experience with solid modeling (Siemens NX), design analysis tools (FEA, etc), and testing methods required
- Structural analysis background preferred
- Linear motion, ball/lead screw and/or gearbox background experience
- Prefer background in motors, drives, and controls or other similar areas
- Excellent communication and presentation skills
- Self-motivated team player
- Hands on approach, willing to “roll up the sleeves”
- Demonstrated leadership ability
- Must be a US Person
Education/Experience:
- BS in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in electromechanical actuation design and development

Specifically:
Must have knowledge and machine programming skills to create programs using Esprit CAD-CAM software with machine simulation and post processers. Must be capable of creating CNC programs to machine 4-6 axis positional moves cutting complex aerospace part configurations in forgings and bars made of specialty metals. This individual must have the ability to specify, recommend and purchase perishable tooling and work holding. Must have an excellent understanding of blue print reading and GD&T tolerances along with very good math and reasoning skills. Please give detailed knowledge and experience on these when applying.
Education and Experience:
- Associate’s degree in CNC programming, a computer-related field or a mechanical field
- Bachelor’s degree in computer programming or computer-related field preferred
- Knowledge of electronics and machine tools
- Experience with programming
- Due to ITAR regulations, must be a U.S. Person
