General Summary:
The focus of a Community Support Professional is to provide support to Individuals with developmental disabilities, through person-centered planning, and assist in building community partnerships to improve the lives of participants with the emphasis on full community integration. Staff will provide choices, instruction, and guidance to enhance success for the Individual who is working at a job or participating in work-type experiences or social/ recreational community integrated activities.
Essential Functions:
1. Provides a person-centered approach as an integral part of the support and supervision of all assigned Individuals
2. Acts as a role model for assigned Individuals and encourages positive interactions with others
3. Applies knowledge about assigned Individuals’ medical condition, history and program plan when interacting with them
4. Assists Individuals with job duties at the job site; teaching all steps of the job tasks and how to complete them effectively and in a timely manner
5. Assists Individuals with vocational training, socialization, and job etiquette
6. Provides training to Individuals in all skills agreed upon on the Individual Service Plan (ISP)
7. Provides input to their supervisor to develop a personalized schedule for the assigned Individuals
8. Instructs Individuals as necessary in socially acceptable behavior and other areas of training
9. Applies behavior modification techniques when interacting with assigned Individuals
10. Collects data and prepares daily ID notes
11. Reviews Desired Outcomes for progress and accuracy
12. Maintains current progress notes and data counts on assigned Individuals
13. Assists and supports Individuals in all areas of grooming and personal hygiene skills
14. Works closely with community members, other employees, the Individual’s work groups, and/or other agencies to ensure Individuals’ success within these organizations
15. Maintains open lines of communication with Individuals, staff members, administrators, parents, and conservators
16. Participates in recreational activities in a variety of settings
17. Establishes and maintains the highest level of quality service to all Individuals and stakeholders
18. Ensures non-discrimination in the delivery of program services and assistance
19. Attends all required trainings and staff meetings essential for the position

1. Proven ability to exercise mature judgment and relate to Individuals with developmental disabilities and dual diagnoses in a warm and caring manner
2. Working knowledge of state and federal laws, Regional Center, Department of Developmental Services, and Titles 17 and 22
3. Knowledge of behavioral challenges, including aggressive, non-verbal, and self-injurious behaviors and the various techniques to de-escalate these behaviors
4. Ability to work with a diverse group of people at all levels within the organization
5. Ability to meet scheduled activities and responsibilities, as assigned, and use effective time management skills to ensure Individuals are meeting their work responsibilities
6. Demonstrates effective interpersonal skills when working with Individuals and other stakeholders
7. Ability to communicate effectively with others, including Developmentally Disabled Individuals, co-workers, and outside agency representatives
8. Works collaboratively, positively, and with flexibility when interacting with others, including co-workers
9. Ability to comfortably interact with Individuals with maturity and tactfulness in very personal situations such as when restroom assistance is needed
10. Demonstrates compassion, friendliness, and patience while providing support and supervision of Individuals
11. Effective planning and organizational skills to balance and prioritize work
12. Demonstrates effective writing skills to document Individuals’ progress
13. Ability to be diplomatic and professional in challenging situations
14. Demonstrates flexibility and effective decision-making when faced with changing priorities
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:
1. Minimum High School graduate or GED equivalent required
2. Certified in Non-violent Crisis Prevention required or must successfully complete in-house training
3. Must have a current CPR and First Aid card or must successfully complete in-house training
4. Must have Direct Support Professional I and II Certification or must successfully complete state-provided training within six (6) months of hire
5. At least one (1) year of relevant experience working with Individuals that have developmental disabilities preferred
6. Completion of a minimum of 12 hours of continuing education units annually required
7. Ability to speak, read, and write in English is required. The ability to speak Spanish is highly desired.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:
Most of the work will be performed in the community during work hours with occasional work in the company’s offices. This position is expected to meet the needs of the business and the assigned Individuals in the community. The employee may be required to lift, carry, push, and pull items such as wheelchairs. The employee may reach at or below shoulder level as well as reach overhead. The employee may be required to lift and/or transfer Individuals between sitting and standing. The employee will be required to perform these physical demands with or without the aid of mechanical devices sufficient to perform the essential position duties.
