Responsibilities


The Office of Distance Learning (ODL) is seeking a talented content writer to join our team as we support quality online instruction at Florida State University. We offer a collegial, innovative work culture that’s passionate about excellence, quality, and collaboration. As a content writer, you’ll be responsible for creating engaging scripts for videos and podcasts, blog posts and news articles, email and social media messages, web and user-interface copy, and printed publications. You’ll work closely with subject matter experts, instructional designers, communications staff, and media production staff to identify goals, understand the intended audience, and then translate academic and instructional content into engaging digital content.

  • Work collaboratively with clients, staff, and ODL leadership to identify project needs and write effective, engaging written content for news articles, blog posts, social media, emails, webpages, user interfaces, reports, and printed publications.
  • Write scripts for instructional and promotional videos, collaborating with the media production team to identify and include visual elements.
  • Review content for other ODL units, providing constructive feedback and edits that improve the quality, accuracy, and effectiveness of communications.
  • Participate in discovery and project planning meetings, gathering information and contributing ideas on the effective use of communications media. Write and present communications plans to teammates, ODL leadership, and other stakeholders.
  • Research and evaluate emerging media, communications, and marketing trends, issues, and technologies. Keep updated on trends and issues in higher education and distance learning, making recommendations for the adoption of new communication media and technologies to facilitate and support ODL’s mission.

Qualifications


A Bachelor's degree and two years of experience; or a high school diploma or equivalent and six years of experience. (Note: a combination of post high school education and experience equal to six years.)

  • Excellent writing skills, with the ability to write engaging and informative copy for a broad audience
  • Ability to communicate effectively and convey technical information to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Ability to conduct research as appropriate for assigned projects and initiatives and learn new technologies and applicable computer applications
  • Attention to detail, with the ability to ensure that content is accurate and error-free
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to give and receive direction; and contribute to a service-oriented work culture
  • Ability to independently manage, prioritize, and organize multiple projects; meet project deadlines

Preferred Qualifications

  • Coursework in or experience writing and formatting scripts for video productions
  • Experience working with subject matter experts and instructional media
