The Counsel – Litigation will report to Managing Counsel - Litigation and work as a member of his/her team. Counsel will consult with business management and other members of the Phillips 66 Legal Team.

Responsibilities may include:
Providing legal support for complex litigation/claims section of large corporate law department

Managing complex litigation docket to include developing case strategies, case plans, case budgets, costs management, overseeing and advising outside counsel, and conducting risk analyses

Working directly with claimants and/or their legal representatives in the resolution of disputes

Recommending course of action to Phillips 66 business representatives

Providing legal advice to Phillips 66 staff and management and providing direction to procure the optimal early resolution through ADR or, if necessary, trial of personal injury matters and ensuring litigation costs associated with personal injury claims are appropriate for the magnitude and risk of the matter

Being on call during Crisis Management situations

Required:
Legally authorized to work in the United States

J.D. degree from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association

Admitted to the State Bar of Texas or other appropriate jurisdiction

Minimum 5 years litigation experience

Preferred:
Knowledge and experience with complex litigation cases in a variety of areas, including but not limited to, Contract Dispute, Real Estate, Tort/Toxic, Environmental, Employment and FERC litigation

Experience providing advice to clients in crisis management situations

Experience in insurance or dispute resolution

Superior mediation, negotiation, advocacy and presentation skills, and mature judgment and discretion

Ability to manage and prioritize assignments which may be broad in scope and complexity, and which involve collaborative work with employees in different departments or with varying degrees of seniority required

Self-initiation on regular and complex assignments

Strong hands-on experience and leadership in the discovery process, both paper and electronic (including the updated Federal Rules of Discovery)

Effective utilization and communication with internal support staff including assigned paralegal and administrative assistant

Excellent written and oral communication skills required; ability to effectively manage and communicate with internal business clients and outside the Company with opposing and outside counsel, experts, witnesses and vendors, constructively channeling conflict to produce a positive outcome

Ability to work independently within broadly defined objectives, being able to perform job functions without extensive supervision, taking ownership of projects and accepting responsibility

Ability to anticipate and address customers’ changing needs

Ability to learn quickly and apply Phillips 66 policies, procedures, operations and industry practices

Comprehensive analytical, conceptual, problem-solving, planning, evaluation and legal project management skills

Experience with decision tree risk analysis

Ability to prepare and present clear, concise and persuasive oral/written opinions, reports, correspondence and presentations required

Effective use of knowledge and experience in establishing and weighing alternatives for making decisions associated with area of responsibility

Capable of establishing professional credibility with variety of clients and management
