POSITION SUMMARY:
The Director of School Administration is responsible for assisting in building the capacity of the Pre-K Director and building level principals for continuous improvement of teaching and learning. The director will have decision making power to address day-to-day academic and operational school issues and will be responsible for ensuring the school division’s mission and goals are achieved. Collaboration with multiple departments to ensure consistency of practice and use of resources will be essential as this position works continuously to improve the skills and knowledge base of school administrators.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Effectively demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions and possesses a combination of education, training, and/or experience as follows:
- A minimum of eight years of successful leadership experience of increasing responsibilities in a public educational setting, classroom instruction, experience supervising others, familiarity with school district operations, three years shall have been in an instructional supervisory capacity (K12 building principal experience preferred).
- Graduate of an accredited college/university with a master’s degree in education, Virginia Post Graduate Professional license, with endorsement in Administration and Supervision.
2. Knowledge of:
- Best practices to positively impact student achievement.
- Principles and practices of organization, administration and personnel management including supervision, training and performance evaluation, budget preparations and administration.
- State/federal regulations and accreditation requirements governing public education programs.
3. Ability to:
- Design, develop, implement, direct, review and evaluate the district wide instructional program.
- Provide leadership assistance to the Chief Academic Officer in all facets of the district’s development, promotion and implementation of the district’s academic priorities, objectives and improvement efforts.
- Analyze data and information to guide continuous improvement.
- Analyze problems, identify solutions, project consequences of proposed actions and implement recommendations in support of division-wide goals.
- Guide and coach improvement work in schools.
- Work with families and principals to effectively resolve issues.
4. Experience working directly with individuals and families from diverse backgrounds.
5. Familiarity with racial equity and inclusion frameworks. Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities. Respects the worth, dignity and individual differences of others.
6. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to present to diverse audiences, specifically racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse communities to foster professional relationships and express and/or exchange ideas.
7. Excellent interpersonal skills.
8. Proficiency in the use of a variety of office equipment and technology with experience using Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and email.
9. Demonstrated leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, teachers, administrators, families, and the community.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Coaches and supports building administrators in goal setting, planning, development, implementation, and monitoring of action plans that will guide school leaders in meeting their instructional leadership objectives and for their schools to meet performance targets.
- Plans and leads high quality and relevant learning experiences for building administrators to guide the implementation of effective instructional programs.
- Collaborates with building level Principals, Teaching and Learning and Virginia Department of Education (where applicable) to develop, implement, and evaluate the Continuous School Improvement Plan process for each school.
- Conducts regular formal and informal classroom walk-throughs aligned to student achievement and strategic goals.
- Provides feedback on successful leadership practices, such as effective management of instructional staff, use of data, and establishment of school culture.
- Collaborates with the staff in Teaching and Learning to ensure alignment of activities related to student learning and teacher, administrator, and staff competencies.
- Collaborates with instructional leadership to plan, develop, and implement professional development opportunities for principals.
- Assists with agenda development and coordinating the Principals’ meetings.
- Effectively and in a timely manner respond to parents’/guardians’/constituents’ concerns that were not first resolved by the building principal.
- Attends school-based meetings and events to foster a culture of engagement with staff, families, and the school community.
- Builds the instructional leadership capacity of principals with particular focus on instruction, data analysis, aligned interventions, community, and culture.
- Supports principals in building the leadership capacity of assistant principals.
- Creates a culture of inquiry and mutual accountability among the building principals.
- Visits schools on a regular basis to connect with principals and support their growth and development.
- Serves on the Superintendent’s Discipline Committee.
- Effectively supervises and evaluates assigned staff.
- Attends appropriate regional, state, and national conferences in the interest of improving principals and school instruction.
- Takes all industry standard precautions to protect students, staff, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Maintains appropriate state licensure; assumes responsibility for and participates in staff development (professional growth) and training to keep materials, supplies, and skills up-to-date.
- Follows appropriate safety procedures and properly maintains equipment.
- Actively participates in and attends all required meetings.
- Maintains confidentiality when appropriate.
- Complies with and supports school division policies, regulations, procedures, and the HCPS Strategic Plan.
- Effectively performs other duties as assigned by the Chief Academic Officer and Superintendent.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Light work, lifting up to 25 pounds occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds frequently. Regular travel throughout the school and effectively interact with students, staff, and the school community. Regular contact with staff members is required. Not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
EVALUATION:
Performance will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on the evaluation of administrative personnel.
