The Applied Technologies for Learning in the Arts & Sciences group is searching for a Director of the Bachelors of Liberal Studies (BLS) Program to work with the Associate Dean for Technology and Online Learning to support the overall operation and development of the BLS program including collaborating and coordinating with appropriate stakeholders to ensure its success. The Director will lead the creation of the first large-scale fully online undergraduate degree at Illinois whose primary objective is to serve students who need to complete a degree they have begun at another institution.
Duties & Responsibilities
Program Leadership
- Provide leadership to instructors, course developers (ATLAS, CITL, private vendors), and Coursera in design and delivery of courses.
- Lead coordination with faculty and units to ensure courses are available.
- Coordinate with the LAS Student Academic Affairs Office to ensure adequate advising and student support is provided for students in the BLS program.
- Ensures that adequate career advising is provided with the Careers Center of LAS for students in the BLS program.
- Responsible for working with the College of LAS Dean’s office to ensure a timely launch of the program.
- Lead work with other campus offices to ensure proper approvals for courses are obtained and ongoing expectations are maintained.
- Responsible for ensuring that academic units, courses, instructors, and mentors follow LAS and campus policies and processes.
- Explore new technologies as well as opportunities for their adoption to support the program's mission.
Management
- Oversight of Program support staff including assigning and reviewing work, conducting performance evaluations, addressing work issues, approving time, and setting goals.
- Manage the budget and oversee business operations for the Program in collaboration with College Business Services.
- Work with Associate Dean, LAS Instructors and governing bodies within the College to contribute to and implement the strategic plan.
College and Campus Representation and Liaison
- Represent the College with campus committees and task forces.
- Represent the College and University as a thought leader in initiatives, partnerships, and industry professional associations.
Perform other job-related duties as assigned to further the mission of the unit.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree.
- Five (5) years of work experience developing and providing services to students, faculty and staff engaged in online and innovative programs in a higher education setting.
- Demonstrated experience with oversight of traditional, blended/hybrid and online courses.
(Note: Master’s Degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for one (1) year of work experience.)
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree.
- Four (4) years experience working in academic online instruction (either as a course instructor, developer, or administrator).
- Four (4) years experience working as an administrator in an academic setting.
- Two (2) years supervisory experience.
- Experience with the Coursera platform, ideally at the instructor or developer level.
- Experience creating and implementing large scale policies.

Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5003 - Program Director position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after job ending date. Salary is commensurate with experience.
