Position Overview

The Director, Peace & Security Policy provides strategic and programmatic guidance around the peace and security portfolio for the Better World Campaign (BWC) team. The Director, Peace & Security Policy, leads the peacekeeping portfolio at the Better World Campaign and is a senior member of the Better World Campaign and United Nations Foundation (UNF) Advocacy teams. The Director will also participate in and contribute to policy work of the UN Foundation related to the UN’s core peace and security functions. This position reports to the Executive Director, Better World Campaign at the UN Foundation.

This position is based in New York or Washington, DC.

Essential Functions

  • Promote U.S. foreign policy in support of United Nations efforts in peacekeeping, peacebuilding, stabilization, and conflict prevention
  • Track, monitor, and analyze the UN Security Council and UN peace operations mandate renewals as well as drive messaging to U.S. Congress and relevant committees on these issues
  • Build and support relationships across U.S Government, including the State Department, Defense Department, and Congress as well as the UN Department of Peace Operations, Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, and other key UN stakeholders
  • Build, support, and chair the Partnership for Effective Peacekeeping, a coalition in support of UN Peacekeeping, with Refugees International, Stimson Center, and Center for Civilians in Conflict; including helping to plan, organize, moderate monthly meetings; craft summaries of the events and/or white papers; and conduct follow-up afterwards with relevant actors on Capitol Hill, with Executive Branch and within UN
  • Shape communications strategy that translates United Nations peace and security activities to a U.S. audience including Capitol Hill, the Administration, and broader public
  • Research reforms at the United Nations that promote more effective peacekeeping, special political missions, peacebuilding, and conflict prevention
  • Analyze and shape communications around complex issues related to the UN’s peace and security priorities to translate them for congressional and public audiences
  • Research and draft briefing materials, documents, white papers for U.S. government officials, Congressional audience, and American constituencies on UN peacekeeping, special political missions, conflict prevention, and peacebuilding activities in areas and topics of U.S. strategic interest (e.g., Sudan, South Sudan, the Sahel, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Haiti, and Afghanistan) in order to improve mutual understandings of shared priorities between the U.S. and UN
  • Educate diverse U.S. audiences about the work of the United Nations on peace and security including through media and wider public engagement
  • Develop policy and advocacy initiatives in the area of multilateral peace and security policy initiatives that can contribute to a stronger U.S.-UN relationship
  • Contribute to BWC’s legislative agenda, including informing Congress on United Nations work related to peacekeeping, special political missions, peacebuilding, stabilization, and conflict management
  • Shape and contribute to fundraising proposals related to UN peace and security and U.S. advocacy
  • Manage content for UN peacekeeping portion of website
  • Contribute to strategy and implementation of BWC online peacekeeping advocacy and outreach
  • Plan and oversee all peace & security related local events
  • Direct events team in showcasing elements of UN operations in the field
  • Other duties as assigned

Selection Criteria

  • Minimum 10 years of progressively senior level experience in international relations, peace and security, UN affairs or a related field required. Practical policy or field experience strongly preferred
  • Knowledge of the United Nations system and peace and conflict resolution required
  • Capitol Hill experience or U.S. government relations experience preferred
  • Track record of savvy policy experience and excellence in navigating policy and political environments
  • Exceptional oral and written communications skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Team player willing to step-in where needed
  • Experience with website design and Microsoft Access and Excel preferred
  • Ability to work under pressure and handle stress
  • Knowledge of additional language(s) other than English preferred
  • Ability to travel internationally and domestically 20% of the time
