CLASS TITLE: Epidemiologist

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Job Functions: This position will report directly to the Epidemiology Manager. The Epidemiologist will take a lead role in disease investigation for high-risk reportable infectious disease cases. This position will monitor electronic reporting from hospitals to participate in active surveillance of facilities serving high risk cases. In addition, this position will work closely with Epidemiology Manager, Surveillance Specialist, and County Health Authority to coordinate testing, conduct contact tracing, manage data and closely monitor high-risk cases.

This position is full-time, Monday through Friday, with occasional work after hours and on weekends to support Program activities. This position is a grant-funded position and the position and salary are directly dependent upon grant funds received.

Specific Duties:

  • Conduct investigation for infectious disease cases by completing case interviews, acquiring medical records of known cases and reaching out to contacts of cases to advise on quarantine protocol
  • Ensure that affected parties such as household contacts and workplaces are aware of case status and taking proper precautions to prevent the spread of the disease
  • Review completed case investigations to appropriately classify cases and ensure accurate data and record-keeping within the Health Department
  • Coordinate laboratory testing with public health reference laboratories when warranted
  • Develop and execute data management reports to assess completeness and timeliness of case investigations
  • Participate in telephone duty during normal business hours, including receipt of called-in case reports, and provision of clinical or public health consultation or recommendations to healthcare professionals and the general public

Working Conditions: Must be available to work Monday thru Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., occasional evening and weekend hours.

MINIMUM ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge: Knowledge of basic computer programs. Knowledge of office practices and procedures.

Skills/Abilities: Must possess excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills. Must be able to handle multiple tasks and crisis situations. Exercise sound judgment and the ability to think critically. Ability to show empathy and patience to distressed individuals. Must possess a willingness and ability to learn quickly and adapt to a variety of situations. Ability to exhibit a professional, positive attitude and work ethic.

Physical Requirements: Constantly sees and hears, cleans, files, sorts, and writes; frequently walks, sits, stands.

Education/Experience: Bachelor Degree required; At least three years’ experience in office setting;
Experience in public relations or customer service; Experience in public health, medical or related field preferred; Bilingual a plus.

Other: Must possess a valid Class C driver’s License with a good driving record. Other state valid
Driver’s License equivalent to Texas Class C with a good driving record will be considered.

The County may consider all related education and/or experience in determining the applicant's minimum qualifications and starting salary.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $60,320.00 - $72,800.00 per year
