Essential Functions and Objectives:

Supervise farm workers and volunteers and manage day-to-day activity and coordination of a school farm and season extension structures to produce fresh, sustainably grown fruits and vegetables to serve in school cafeterias. Farmer is also responsible for planting, tending to, harvesting, washing, weighing, and packaging the produce for cafeterias. Provide training and guidance to staff, meet production and quality standards and track associated farm data. Ensures compliance with all food, safety, and sanitation regulations

Responsibilities:

Day to execution: provides various support and conducts activities related to logistics, reporting, training, communications, and processes. Participates in the planning and implementation of new initiative.

Problem solving: assesses and troubleshoots escalated problems and applies expert understanding to resolve complex challengers of stakeholders; focuses on root cause of identification in order to achieve systemic and sustainable improvement. Approves and documents exceptions for compliance record keeping and reporting.

Collaboration: ensures appropriate key stakeholder involvement in planning, goal-setting and implementation to achieve buy-in of work products. Ensures purposeful, positive and professional interactions and relationships with all stakeholders; enables consistent application of work products across the district.

Continuous improvement: identifies opportunities for improvement, prioritizes, and recommends solutions to management. Implements approved enhancements to ensures consistency cross the district. Identifies opportunities to reduce costs; analyzes available data, trends, and feedback, and ensures compliance with expectations for optimal operation and goal achievement.


Essential Functions:

Manages and oversees all day to day farm operations.

Coordinates daily farming operations at assigned school, implementing a growing/crop plan, determining when to plant and projecting yields.

Evaluates equipment needs.

Ensures consistent vegetable production on the school farm using sustainable techniques; maximizes produce yields from planted crop.

Monitors pest, nutrient, and weed density levels on the farm and maintains the appearance of farm grounds.

Supervises assigned farm staff and volunteers ensuring completion of all work routines and tasks as assigned.

Develops Yearly On-Farm Food Safety plan for in-ground production and season extension and maintains documentation of food safety markers.

Maintains farm records detailing amendments applied, crop varieties, and planting diagrams.

Plans, coordinates, and conducts training of farm staff and volunteers according to the on Farm Safety plan and promotes a safe work environment at all times.

Observes daily farming operations for cost effectiveness and constantly makes and implements recommendations for improvements.

Serves as an informational resource for teacher/student learning or for visitors to the farm upon request.


Credential Requirements:

Valid Colorado Driver's License, appropriate insurance coverage and acceptable driving record for the past three years.


Education Requirements:

GED or high school diploma.
Minimum of 3 years' experience on a production farm.
Season extension experience required.


Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Proficiency with Microsoft Office Products, including Word, Excel, and Outlook
Effective time management and organizational skills.
Effective communication skills.
Strong attention to detail.
Ability to adjust schedules in accordance with seasonal cycles and weather changes.
A sound understanding of the business practices involved in selling crops and other farm products and an awareness of the market behavior and demand for specific types of farm products.
Possesses sound management, training, and delegation ability.
Ability to problem solve operational challenges and think and react quickly.
A comprehensive understanding of the farming practices involved in the type of farm that is being operated.
Ability to perform minor irrigation system and hoophouse repairs.
Ability to collect and track production data and use data to inform planting/harvesting.
Possesses awareness of the safety of self and others in all actions.
