The Fiber Fuser Tech may work with other workgroups to splice/fuse, terminate, test, install, connect, and inspect signal strength and loss reviews outside of Information Technology Terminals/stations (OSP-Outside Plant). The Fiber Fuser Tech prepares, creates, and performs inspections of splices on fiber optic cable facilities along with maintaining, repairing and replacing splices on new and existing fiber optic cable facilities according to the direction of the supervisor and will be utilized to terminate and splice fiber optic cables in accordance with engineering designs. This position will require competencies including, attention and adherence to detail regarding splice preparation and quality through maintaining a clean safe work environment and executing highly dexterous activities. Perform other Fiber Optic duties and responsibilities as required and assigned. Must be available to work all hours and in all weather conditions pursuant to Article 5, Section 3 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Summary of Responsibilities:
1. Prep the fiber optic cables into splice cases in accordance with Distribution Standards and complete the selection., preparation, splicing, integrity review and routing of individual fibers within the cable in accordance with the engineering design and distribution construction standards.
2. Identify, and rearranve fibers when optical fiber cable lines are reconfigured or repaired.
3. Responsible for measuring and locating points of loss, intermittency, or degradation of signal between points along the fiber optic cable when network testing has identified the damage is on the fiber optic cable
4. Work with all necessary Fiber Optic related splicing equipment such as Fusion splicing machines, Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR), Optical Spectrum Analyzers, power meters, Fiber Identifier and other new technologies as developed.
5. Splicing on new and existing construction on a variety of fiber optic cable types such as Loose Tube, Ribbon, Micro, Optical Ground Wire (OPGW), etc.
6. Splicing activity may be performed on fiber optic cables with both dark fiber and lit services. (Dark Fiber = non-activer fiber, Lit Fiber is fiber that is actively transmitting data).
7. Conduct and validate all initialization and operational checks of network equipment in accordance with all Fiber Optic procedures and equipment manufacturer's specifications.
8. Work with the Operations Control Center (OCC), Distribution Automation Field Engineering (DAFE), Utility Communications (UCOMM) and other workgroups as required for final acceptance and testing of all newly installed or repaired Fiber optic related equipment and cable. Save and transmit test data for record keeping.
9. Perform site survey of locations to ensure quality installation of all racks, fiber cable and related equipment, etc. Report all defects to the supervisor.
10. Label and tag all equipment and cabling according to Distribution Standards & Engineering Diagrams.
11. Interface with UCOMM to complete and update hard copy and/or electronic records of work completed on various assignments. Including, but not limted to splicing diagrams and signal loss test results.
12. Care for, clean and maintain fiber optic splicing and testing equipment including calibration and testing per company guidance and reporting of recalibration or repair needs.
13. Care for and maintain company vehicle and equipment.
14. Work safely, with or without supervision.
15. Ability to work aloft never to exceed a height which would encroach on electrical clearance requirements (minimum approach distances) for a non-electrically qualified worker.
16. Perform other Fiber Optic duties and responsibilities as required and assigned.
17. Must be available to work all hours and in all weather conditions pursuant to Article 5, Section 3 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- Possession of Commercial Learners Permit
- Successful completion of Technical Occupations Selection System (TECH)
- Successful completion of Company Assessment Process
- Must have ability to work in confined and/or enclosed spaces
- Must have high dexterity to work with small and intricate fiber optic components
- Must have the ability to accurately identify and match fiber strands on industry standard cables including but not limited to matching strands differentiated by the colors of the communications color code
- Must have the ability to read, interpret, and update engineering designs and splicing details
- Must possess, or have the ability to obtain, the company determined industry certification for fiber optic splicing and recertify at regular intervals as determined by the Company
